Latex Screed in Horndean

In Horndean we lay latex screed, a two part levelling compound, over awkward but sound bases: plywood overboarding in a bathroom, old quarry or ceramic tiles still stuck fast, and patchy concrete with traces of firm adhesive. It goes down a few millimetres thick and gives sheet vinyl, LVT, lino or carpet a smooth face. With 28% of local homes semi-detached and 16% terraced, the typical setting is a kitchen or bathroom refit in a lived-in house, where the existing floor stays and only its surface needs work.

What latex screed copes with in Horndean refits

Latex screed is the trade name for a levelling compound sold in two parts. A cement based powder is mixed with a latex liquid in place of plain water, and the mix is made for bases such as overboarded ply, old tiles and firm adhesive. It is spread thin, normally just a few millimetres, so it smooths a base without changing its height by much.

That suits the rooms that get refitted in an established house: kitchens, bathrooms, utilities and cloakrooms. Three kinds of base are where it earns its place.

Plywood overboarding. Upstairs bathrooms sit on timber joists, and bare floorboards move too much to carry a thin, rigid finish. The answer is flooring grade plywood screwed down across the boards, then latex over the ply. Latex never goes straight onto bare boards.

Old tiles. Some older kitchens still have quarry or ceramic tiles under later lino. If every tile is firmly stuck, latex can bridge the grout lines and give a flat face, sparing you a noisy, dusty strip-out.

Tired concrete. A solid floor with shallow dips, rough patches and scraps of firm old adhesive can be primed and coated, provided nothing is loose.

The finish decides how smooth the base must be. Sheet vinyl, LVT, lino, rubber and safety flooring all print every bump through, and carpet laid over a rough base wears in lines. When latex is the wrong fix in Horndean homes

Latex hides an uneven surface; it does not mend a faulty floor. Before pricing a room in Cowplain, Lovedean, Wecock or the middle of Horndean, we check three things.

Movement. Stand on the floor and feel for give. Boards that bounce will crack a thin layer within weeks, so loose boards are screwed down and the floor overboarded before any compound.

Damp. A solid floor with a moisture problem stays damp under latex, and the compound can lose its bond while new vinyl blisters on top. The cause has to be traced and dealt with first, and on a cold, uninsulated ground floor that can mean rebuilding it.

Level. If the room falls away by more than a thin coat can take up, latex is the wrong product. A repair to the old screed or a full new screed comes first, with latex over it only if the finish asks for it.

Priming closes the preparation. Each base takes its own primer, and a calcium sulphate screed always has its laitance removed and is primed before latex touches it. Where paint, thick glue or raised ridges cover a concrete floor, diamond grinding in Horndean clears them first. The same latex work is offered in Emsworth.

FAQs

Latex Screed in Horndean: your questions

How thick is latex screed?

Thin, usually a few millimetres. It is designed to smooth a base that is already close to level, not to build up height. In a Horndean bathroom on plywood, or a kitchen over old tiles, that is normally all the finish needs. If a floor needs more than a thin coat, a repair or a new screed comes first, and we explain why before quoting.

Can latex go over old quarry tiles in a Horndean kitchen?

Yes, if every tile is firmly bonded. We tap across the floor to find loose or hollow tiles, lift those and fill the gaps, then clean the surface and prime it before the latex. Glazed tiles take a primer made for smooth, non-absorbent surfaces. Where a large share of the tiles are loose, taking them all up is the safer route.

Can I put latex directly onto floorboards?

No. Bare boards flex and shrink with the seasons, and a thin compound on top will crack and break away. Screw the boards down, overboard them with flooring grade plywood and then lay latex over the ply. In a Horndean house with a timber upstairs floor, that is the build-up a bathroom getting sheet vinyl or LVT needs.
