Latex Screed Contractors in Hedge End

We lay latex screed across Hedge End: a two part compound, a few millimetres thick, that lets sheet vinyl, LVT, lino, rubber or carpet lie true over sound but awkward floors. In Hedge End the timing makes it relevant. Many homes put up in the 1980s and 1990s expansion are due their first big refit, and refitted kitchens, bathrooms and cloakrooms often reveal old tiles, patched concrete or timber that needs smoothing before a thin new finish.

Latex screed for Hedge End refurbishments

Latex screed is a levelling compound mixed from two parts. One is a cement based powder; the other is a latex liquid used in place of water. The latex gives the cured layer adhesion and a little flexibility, so it suits bases that a plain compound may struggle with. It is laid thin, typically a few millimetres, and that is the point: it smooths rather than builds up.

A first refurbishment in a Hedge End house of that era tends to find one of four bases underfoot.

Ceramic tiles from the original kitchen, still firmly stuck down. These can be cleaned, primed and covered, so there is no need to break them out.

A concrete or screed floor that is sound but rough, with trowel marks or patched strips where a pipe or drain was moved.

Timber floors upstairs in bathrooms and en suites. These are overboarded with flooring grade plywood, screwed down at close centres, before any latex goes on. Latex placed directly on bare boards cracks along the joints as the boards move.

Sound old adhesive left after vinyl or carpet comes up, which can often be primed and skimmed.

The finishes that need this are thin and flexible: sheet vinyl, LVT, lino, rubber, safety flooring and carpet. Thick carpet and underlay hid a great deal; LVT hides almost nothing. Where tiles or engineered wood are going down instead, other preparation may suit better, and the Hedge End floor levelling page covers the general choice between compound and screed.

Damp, movement and level in Hedge End floors

Some floors are not ready for latex, and laying it anyway only postpones the problem.

Damp has to be dealt with first. Latex will not stop moisture, and under a sealed vinyl it can lose its bond. Only 2% of Hedge End's homes went up before 1919, and 3% between the wars, so floors with no membrane at all are less likely here than in older towns, yet a reading is still taken before we price.

Movement is the next check. Springy boards or loose ply will crack a thin compound, so they are screwed down or replaced before any latex is mixed.

Level is the third. A conservatory base kept when the room is rebuilt, or a floor that falls towards an old doorway, may be out by far more than latex can take. Those floors need a new screed or deeper levelling, and the page on sand and cement screed in Hedge End explains relaying.

Priming comes last. Every base gets a matching primer. On a calcium sulphate screed the laitance is sanded off and the surface primed before latex goes on. Neighbouring latex screed in Eastleigh is handled the same way.

FAQs

Latex Screed in Hedge End: your questions

What is latex screed made of?

Two parts: a cement based powder and a latex liquid, mixed together on site in place of the water used for ordinary compounds. The latex improves grip and adds a little flexibility, which helps on plywood, old tiles and sound adhesive. On a Hedge End refit it goes down a few millimetres thick as a smoothing layer for thin floor finishes.

Do I need latex under LVT in a Hedge End bathroom?

Often. LVT and sheet vinyl follow every ridge, screw head and board joint beneath them. In a Hedge End bathroom with a timber floor, flooring grade plywood screwed over the boards and then a thin coat of latex gives a surface smooth enough that those marks do not show through. On sound concrete, latex alone may be enough.

Is latex screed waterproof?

No. Latex screed is a smoothing layer, not a damp proof membrane or tanking. It will not stop moisture coming up through a slab, and in a Hedge End shower area the waterproofing is a separate system. A damp floor is treated before latex goes down, and an old ridge or coating may need diamond grinding in Hedge End first.
