Sand and Cement Screeding in Hedge End

Sand and cement is the hand-laid screed we mix up on site at Hedge End jobs and pack down with a trowel and float. With over half the town's houses built between 1973 and 1999, it is less about period renovation here and more about the rooms liquid screed does not suit: garage conversions, wet rooms with falls, small utility floors, and older post-war houses where a solid floor has failed. It can also be bonded thin to a sound slab or modified for early load.

Garage conversions and wet rooms in Hedge End

A garage conversion turns a cold concrete floor into a habitable one. Most garage slabs in these houses sit below the hall floor, have no insulation and were only ever meant for a car. Converting it means adding a membrane and insulation and raising the floor with a screed to meet the house. Sand and cement works well: mixed in small batches, it suits a single room, and the depth can be varied to take out a slope. For the full build-up, from slab to finished screed, read screeding a converted garage.

A wet room is the second place a Hedge End house needs cement screed. The floor of a walk-in shower must slope down to the drain and may be damp for long spells, so calcium sulphate is out. Hand-laid sand and cement can be formed to accurate falls and copes with water once cured. Utility rooms and downstairs cloakrooms fall into the same category.

Depths follow the build-up. Over insulation, with nothing bonding it down, a Hedge End house floor gets 65mm, and commercial floors 75mm. Stuck down to a slab in good condition, it can be just 25 to 40mm. Where early load or extra toughness is needed, the mix can be made stronger with a higher strength screed, or reinforced with fibres, which add £1 to £3 per m² on published figures. Leave out those additions and the 2026 UK published price sits between £18 and £25 per m².

Relaying older post-war floors in Hedge End

In Hedge End, 25% of homes date from 1945 to 1972, and 22% of all homes are terraced. Over the decades, some of those ground floors have cracked, dropped or stopped keeping the damp out. Patches rarely hold on a floor like that; it is better to take it out, put down a membrane and insulation, and screed over them. Floor preparation covers the break-out and cleaning, and insulation and membranes covers the layers beneath.

We pack the screed down hard and power float it until the top is dense and true. The trade-off is drying. Counting a day for every millimetre of the first 40mm, and slower going for the rest, a 65mm floor will not be ready for tiles, LVT or timber for many weeks. A quick drying screed mix, from £20 to £28 per m² on published figures, shortens that where the programme is tight.

For a house that is lived in during the work, a phased approach helps: one room broken out and screeded at a time, with the rest of the ground floor kept in use. We agree the order before starting, so the kitchen or the only downstairs toilet is not out of action for longer than it needs to be.

FAQs

Sand and Cement Screed in Hedge End: your questions

How long does sand and cement screed take to dry?

Many weeks for a typical 65mm floating floor: the first 40mm dry at around a day per millimetre, and the rest more slowly than that. Good ventilation helps. In a Hedge End garage conversion or extension, test the moisture with a hygrometer before the flooring goes down rather than counting days on the calendar.

Can I lay a thin screed over my existing Hedge End floor?

Yes, if what is there now is solid, clean and firmly attached; a sand and cement screed bonded onto it can be 25 to 40mm. It has to bond fully, so the surface is prepared and primed first. If the floor is cracked, hollow or damp, a thin topping will fail and the floor needs taking up. For only a few millimetres, levelling compound is the right product.

Is sand and cement screed suitable for a wet room?

It is, and in most wet rooms it is what we would pick. It can be formed to falls towards the drain and tolerates water once cured, unlike calcium sulphate. In a Hedge End bathroom being turned into a walk-in shower, the screed depth and falls are set from the drain position and the finished floor level, so both are agreed before we start.
