Floor Levelling and Self Levelling Screed in Emsworth

We level uneven floors in Emsworth with self levelling compound so LVT, vinyl, large tiles and engineered wood go down flat. The local work is domestic: a knock-through that joins two rooms at slightly different heights, an extension floor meeting the old house, or an older solid floor that has worn uneven. A few millimetres of compound, laid over the right primer, turns those into one smooth surface ready for flooring.

Levelling knock-throughs and extensions in Emsworth homes

Knock-throughs and rear extensions are among the typical projects on the town's post-war bungalows and detached houses. Both leave the same problem on the floor: two surfaces that were never meant to meet. There may be a step of a few millimetres, a dip where a wall used to stand, or a patch where the old floor was cut back.

Modern finishes show every bit of it. LVT and sheet vinyl follow the floor exactly, so ridges and hollows show when the light catches them. Large format tiles rock on a dip and can crack. Engineered wood needs a flat base for its joints to stay tight.

The yardstick is a 2m straightedge. SR1 allows up to 3mm of deviation and is the class many thin sheet finishes demand. SR2 allows 5mm and SR3 10mm. Once the floor is checked, it is primed with a product chosen for its base, and compound is poured, in most cases 2mm to roughly 10mm deep. Fast drying products mean flooring can often follow soon after.

Of Emsworth's homes, 23% were built between 1973 and 1999, and floors of that age often need only this kind of light levelling rather than anything more. A new kitchen or a change from carpet to LVT is often the trigger. For very thin skims before sheet flooring, a latex screed of a few millimetres is often enough.

When an Emsworth floor needs more than compound

Compound is for surfaces that are sound but uneven. It is not a cure for a floor that is failing. Laid too deep to hide a floor that really needs replacing, it can crack and debond.

In older houses in the conservation area and on streets such as Queen Street and Victoria Road, many floors were laid without a damp proof membrane and have worn badly. Putting compound over one of those rarely lasts, because the problem is below the surface. Those floors usually need lifting and relaying, as described on our Emsworth sand and cement screed page.

Smaller faults sit between the two. A crack, a hollow patch or a damaged section around a doorway can often be cut out and repaired before levelling. Our screed repairs service handles that.

We tell you plainly which a floor needs. If compound will do, it is the quicker and cheaper route. If it will not, we say so before any money is spent. For homes to the north, see floor levelling in Petersfield.

FAQs

Floor Levelling in Emsworth: your questions

How thick can self levelling compound be laid?

Compound normally goes down 2mm to roughly 10mm thick, with certain products rated deeper. Poured thicker than its sheet allows, it risks cracking and lifting off the base. If an Emsworth floor needs more than that to be flat, a new screed is usually the better answer.

Do floors need priming before levelling compound?

Yes. The primer seals the base and helps the compound bond, and the right one depends on what the floor is: a sand and cement screed, a calcium sulphate screed, concrete or an old tiled surface. The wrong primer can cause the compound to lift or crack later.

Can levelling compound join two floors of different heights?

Within limits. A small step of a few millimetres can be feathered out with compound so the floor reads as one surface. A larger step is better handled by building up the lower floor with screed first, then levelling over both to reach the flatness the finish needs.
