Self Levelling Screed and Floor Levelling in Petersfield

Self levelling compound is how we take the dips and ridges out of Petersfield floors before LVT, vinyl, large format tiles or engineered wood go down. The work suits homes and business premises alike, including shop and office refits. The first thing to settle is how far out the floor is: compound is usually laid from about 2mm up to around 10mm, and a Petersfield floor that is worse than that normally needs a new screed instead.

Levelling post-war and extended floors in Petersfield

A fifth of Petersfield's homes, 20%, went up between 1945 and 1972, and after that many decades their floors have usually sunk in places, dipped or been patched once or twice. Add an extension and the problem grows: the old floor and the new one rarely finish at exactly the same level, and the join shows through a thin covering.

Put vinyl or LVT on a rough floor and every ridge shows through. Their makers often call for SR1, so a 2m straightedge laid on the floor must show 3mm or less of daylight under it. SR2 allows 5mm and SR3 allows 10mm, under the same BS 8204 test. Big tiles are just as fussy, because an uneven base leaves one edge standing proud of the next.

Compound fixes this when the base is sound. The floor is cleaned, repairs are made, and then it is primed with the correct product for the surface, whether that is sand and cement screed, concrete, calcium sulphate screed or a suitable existing floor. After priming, we pour the compound and work it out across the room until the surface is smooth and true.

Deep pours are where it goes wrong. Pouring compound thick to save a floor that should have been rescreeded risks it cracking and coming away from the base. Where a dip goes a good deal past 10mm, the sensible fix is usually a fresh sand and cement screed. For thin corrections of a few millimetres, see our latex screed service.

Unit, office and shop refits in Petersfield

Light industry in Petersfield is concentrated on the Bedford Road estate on the west side of town, which includes Petersfield Business Park. Freehold units there have recently been bought by owner-occupiers such as Newsome Tools and Viking Test, and a change of occupier is the usual moment for new floor finishes in offices, showrooms and staff areas.

Shops and offices in the town centre face the same question when they refit: can the old floor take new vinyl, carpet tiles or LVT as it is? Often it cannot, because old adhesive, patches and dips all show through.

Downtime is the main concern for a business. Fast drying compounds keep the programme moving, so a refitted area can often be floored soon after levelling, following the product data. Work can be phased room by room where a business must stay open.

Where a concrete floor is contaminated or has a weak surface, concrete floor grinding prepares it first. Cracked or hollow areas of screed can be cut out and made good through our screed repairs service before compound goes on.

FAQs

Floor Levelling in Petersfield: your questions

How flat does a floor need to be for LVT?

Usually SR1. Put a 2m straightedge down anywhere in the room and the biggest gap you find should be 3mm at most, which is what most LVT makers require. Anything rougher shows through as ridges and dips once the planks are down. We measure the floor first, then prime and lay compound to bring it within tolerance, so the fitter has a smooth base to work on.

Is floor levelling the same as sanding floorboards?

No. Levelling is done with a compound poured over something solid, a screed or a concrete slab, until the surface is smooth and flat. Sanding timber boards is a different trade, and we do not offer it. If your Petersfield house has a suspended timber floor, the options are different and worth discussing first.

How soon can flooring go down after levelling compound?

The answer changes with the product and the thickness. A fast drying product will usually bear foot traffic after a few hours and take flooring not long afterwards, but a deeper layer needs more time. We tell you the drying time for the exact compound used, so your flooring fitter can be booked with confidence rather than guesswork.
