Floor Levelling and Self Levelling Screed in Littlehampton

In Littlehampton we pour self levelling compound to flatten uneven floors ahead of LVT, vinyl, large tiles or engineered wood. Littlehampton has plenty of trade premises: Lineside Industrial Estate, off Eldon Way and the A259 bypass, has 28 industrial and trade counter units, and Toddington also has a large business park. Units like these need floor levelling and repairs between tenants, and the same compound work applies to homes where an old floor is too uneven for new flooring.

Lineside Industrial Estate and Toddington unit floors

Lineside Industrial Estate sits north of Littlehampton town centre, off Eldon Way and the A259 bypass. Its 28 units include four speculative units finished in 2022. Toddington has a large business park as well. When a unit is fitted out or refitted, especially for a trade counter or showroom area, the floor needs to be flat enough for its new finish.

Self levelling compound does that. It is poured over a prepared, primed base and flows to a flat surface, usually at about 2mm up to around 10mm deep, though some products go deeper. We then test it with a 2m straightedge under BS 8204, which allows gaps of 3mm for SR1, 5mm for SR2 and 10mm for SR3. A showroom getting thin sheet flooring will often need SR1.

Warehouse and trade counter floors need more than levelling sometimes. Worn, cracked or dusty areas may need repair first, and heavy traffic areas may need a high strength screed rather than compound. Broken slabs are mended through our concrete floor repairs.

Priming is the step that makes compound stay down. Concrete and sand and cement screed take one type of primer, calcium sulphate screed needs a compatible one after sanding off the laitance, and non-absorbent surfaces need another. A quick drying compound means the flooring fitter can follow on soon and the fit-out stays on schedule. Before any compound goes on, old adhesive, paint and dust come off, because compound only bonds as well as the surface beneath it.

Levelling uneven floors in Littlehampton homes

One in five Littlehampton homes, 20%, went up between 1945 and 1972. Floors from that era, and older ones, can be uneven from settlement, patching or decades of different finishes. Under carpet that matters little. Under LVT or large format tiles, every dip and ridge shows, and thin sheet vinyl shows even more.

Trouble also shows where a newer extension meets the original floor. A few millimetres of step can be feathered out with compound so the new floor finish runs through without a lip. It is especially important where one continuous run of LVT or tiles crosses from the old kitchen into the extension.

Some floors are beyond what compound can fix. If the base is loose, hollow, broken or out of level by more than compound should take, deep pours can crack and debond. Then we would price rescreeding instead, normally hand-laid sand and cement for an older house.

This service is not timber floor sanding, and we do not supply DIY products. About 7 miles away, see our Worthing floor levelling page.

FAQs

Floor Levelling in Littlehampton: your questions

How thick can self levelling compound be laid?

Expect most compounds to go down at roughly 2mm to 10mm, with a few products rated for more. Beyond that, compound alone is usually the wrong fix and can crack or debond. On a Littlehampton floor that is badly out of level, a new screed or repairs come first, followed by a thin levelling coat if the finish needs it.

Can a trade counter floor be levelled while the unit is empty?

That is the ideal time. Between tenants, a unit at Lineside or Toddington can be stripped, repaired, primed and levelled without working around stock or staff. Fast drying compounds help the new floor finish follow quickly. Before we begin, we settle the order of work with whoever is fitting out the unit.

Is floor levelling needed before laying engineered wood?

Usually, if the base is uneven. Engineered wood can bridge very small dips, but larger deviations cause hollow spots, creaking and joint movement. Most manufacturers state a flatness tolerance. A thin coat of levelling compound on a primed base brings most floors within it, and costs far less than replacing a failed floor later.
