Emsworth post-war homes: new floors with heating
Of Emsworth's homes, 38% were built between 1945 and 1972, and post-war bungalows and detached houses make up a large part of the town. Their original floors are rarely insulated to modern standards, and the owners who replace them often take the chance to add underfloor heating at the same time.
That means taking the old floor out, laying insulation and a membrane, fixing the heating pipes, and screeding over them. Depth is the key number. Pipes under liquid screed need at least 25mm on top, giving 45 to 50mm in total. Hand-laid cement asks for about 45mm above the pipes, so that floor sits higher. The combined build-up has to finish at the right height for doors and thresholds.
Liquid screed flows fully round the pipes with no air pockets, which helps the floor heat evenly and respond faster. On a bungalow, with every room on one level, it can also be poured across the whole floor in one visit. Our page on liquid screed for Emsworth homes covers how that pour is done.
In a rear extension, the new heated floor must meet the existing house exactly. Where the extension is added to an older house with a tight floor height, a thinner liquid build-up can be what makes heating possible at all. Before any pour we check the insulation, edge strip and membrane, so the screed is not let down by what is underneath.
Heat-up and drying for Emsworth heated floors
The heating can help dry the screed, but only on a slow schedule. Calcium sulphate can usually take its first warmth from about day 7. For a cement screed, the heating stays off for 21 days at least. After that, start at a low temperature, raise it a little each day to working level, hold it, then lower it again. Your heating engineer commissions the system and we hand over the screed side in writing. Rushing the first warm-up is one of the common causes of cracks in a new heated floor, so it pays to follow both schedules.
Semi-detached houses make up 27% of the town's homes, and a heated kitchen extension is a typical project on them. Where that extension includes a shower room or utility, a cement screed goes in there, laid in sand and cement for wet areas.
For a heated bungalow floor in liquid screed, the published 2026 UK range is £20 to £35 a square metre. For how long each type takes to dry, read screed drying times explained. For heated floors over the county border, see underfloor heating screed in Chichester.
