Screed depth over heating pipes in Bognor Regis
How well a heated floor works comes down to the screed over the pipes. The screed spreads heat evenly across the room, protects the pipes from load and gives the flooring a flat base. Get the cover wrong and the floor either cracks over the pipes or takes too long to warm up.
Each screed type needs a different cover. With liquid it is 25mm minimum above the pipes, which usually adds up to a 45 to 50mm floor. Sand and cement takes about 45mm above them, making the whole floor thicker. Liquid also flows around each loop with no air gaps, which helps heat transfer and makes the room quicker to warm.
That difference matters when an extension on a post-war or 1980s house has to finish level with the existing floor. Where depth is limited, a liquid screed over the pipes is often the only way to fit insulation, pipes and screed under the existing floor level. Where there is room, and particularly in a smaller room with lots of corners, sand and cement can still be the sensible choice.
We inspect the insulation, membrane and perimeter edge strip before we price, and can provide any that are missing. Fixing the pipes down and pressure testing them is your heating engineer's job and has to be finished before our visit, since we do not install underfloor heating. Our screed thickness guide sets out all of the build-ups.
Heating up a new screed in a Bognor Regis home
The first heat-up should never be rushed, because heating a new screed too quickly can crack it. Bring it up to temperature slowly.
On calcium sulphate the system can normally go on from about 7 days after the pour. Sand and cement needs a minimum of 21 days. Either way, the water starts cool and climbs a few degrees at a time across several days, then stays steady until the flooring is laid. Your heating engineer gets the schedule from us in writing.
Garden rooms are a common case for underfloor heating, because a heated floor leaves the walls free. The same rules apply: insulation below, the right pipe cover, and a gradual first heat.
If the floor is going to be tiled, the screed must also be dry enough for the adhesive, and heating can help with that once commissioning is complete. For insulation boards, membranes and edge strip supplied as part of the job, see our insulation and membranes service. Projects in Worthing are covered on our Worthing heated floor screed page.
