Levelling for large tiles in South Woodham Ferrers kitchens
Large format tiles are unforgiving. A long tile bridges any dip beneath it and rocks or cracks, and the edges of neighbouring tiles sit at different heights, a fault known as lipping. Under LVT or sheet vinyl, each ridge and hollow in the base shows through. So the base has to meet a BS 8204 flatness class first. A 2m straightedge goes across the floor, and the biggest gap under it may be 3mm in SR1, 5mm in SR2 or 10mm in SR3.
An original screed that is sound but uneven is the classic case for compound. Poured over the right primer, it spreads and sets smooth and flat, normally between about 2mm and 10mm deep, though some products go thicker. It dries far faster than a screed, so the tiler can start sooner.
In a town where 78% of homes were built between 1973 and 1999, many original floors and kitchens are now due for renewal, and the joins between rooms need bringing to one level. The same goes for the step where an extension meets the original house, which compound can feather out so one finish runs straight through.
Get the primer wrong and the pour is wasted. Concrete, old tiles, calcium sulphate and the original sand and cement floors in these houses each take a different primer, and a mismatch can let the compound come away.
Unit refits on Redhills Industrial Estate and Ferrers Road
Commercial floors change with tenants. Redhills Industrial Estate on the north eastern edge of the town and the Saltcoats Industrial Area off Ferrers Road provide the main workshop and commercial units, and a new occupier often wants a smooth floor for vinyl, carpet tiles or a showroom finish. Old adhesive, paint and patched areas usually have to come off first, which our floor preparation service handles, including shot blasting.
Once it is clean, we prime it and pour a compound chosen for how the unit will be used. A fast drying product means the flooring fitter can follow on quickly and the fit-out keeps to its dates.
Some floors are past what compound can fix. Pour a thick layer over a slab or screed that is cracked, hollow or well off level, and the compound can crack and lose its bond, so that floor needs new screed instead. In a unit that might mean concrete floor repair before anything else. At home, it might mean replacing the old floor with a new sand and cement screed. About 5 miles away, Wickford has its own page on levelling floors in Wickford.
