Levelling where Sutton extensions meet older floors
The test for flatness is a 2m straightedge, and BS 8204 divides floors into three classes by the gap under it: 3mm for SR1, 5mm for SR2, 10mm for SR3. Thin sheet finishes often insist on SR1, and LVT or big tiles show hollows that a carpet would have hidden.
Older floors often fall outside that. Sutton has 14% of its homes from 1945 to 1972 and 18% from 1973 to 1999, and a floor of that age can be solid and dry yet uneven after decades of wear and earlier flooring. The line where an extension joins the old house often has a small lip or slope as well. Compound, normally poured between about 2mm and around 10mm thick, evens that out so the new flooring carries on without a break.
Preparation decides whether it lasts. We clean the floor, fix any loose or hollow-sounding patches, then prime it with a product chosen for what the base is: concrete, sand and cement, calcium sulphate, or an old floor that is still sound.
Compound is not a repair for a failing floor. Pour it deep to make up for a floor that really wants a screed, and it may crack and come away. If the screed below is breaking up, screed repairs or a new sand and cement screed in Sutton come first, and levelling follows.
Shop, office and unit floors from Times Square to Kimpton
When a shop or office unit in Sutton town centre, around the St Nicholas centre and Times Square, is stripped and refitted, the new fit out needs a clean, flat base for its carpet tiles, vinyl or LVT, and the programme is usually tight. Fast drying levelling compounds help here, taking foot traffic quickly and letting the flooring contractor follow on soon after.
Old adhesive, paint and tile residue have to come off before priming. Concrete floor grinding is the usual way back to a clean, sound surface that compound will bond to.
The Beddington industrial area along Beddington Lane, one of the borough's three Strategic Industrial Locations alongside Kimpton and Imperial Way, is a different case. Heavy duty warehouse floors take forklift traffic and racking loads, and a thin levelling compound is not a wearing surface for that. A unit there may need a higher strength screed or repair of the slab instead. We say so plainly when compound is the wrong answer, and price the right method for the floor.
