Workshop floors from Tile Hill to Ansty Park
Coventry's commercial floors range from the Jaguar Land Rover research and design centre at Whitley to the Ansty Park business site beyond the city edge, where Cadent Gas is among the occupiers. At Tile Hill, small industrial units sit beside new housing on what used to be factory land.
When a workshop or office is refitted, the old surface tends to be the obstacle. Line paint, worn coatings, adhesive from a previous office fit-out and dusty laitance all sit between the new layer and the concrete. Bays that were poured separately can leave a ridge at each joint.
Diamond grinding cuts those away in thin, controlled passes. The heads take the surface down to clean, sound concrete that a primer, compound or resin can bond to. We prepare the floor; if the next layer is resin, another contractor lays it, because resin and polished concrete are outside our work. If it is compound or a screed, our crew can carry straight on, and heavier screeds come under commercial screeding.
Silica is the risk to manage. Concrete and screed both contain it, and grinding produces respirable crystalline silica dust. Every pass is made with extraction attached, and the area is sealed so other parts of the unit can keep working.
Our grinders and diamond heads are not for sale or hire. The machine arrives with the crew and leaves with them.
Old adhesive and extension joins in Coventry houses
In homes, grinding is usually about what the last floor left behind. When carpet, cushioned vinyl or old floor tiles are lifted, the concrete underneath is coated in adhesive. Hard, thin residue grinds off and leaves a surface ready for primer and levelling.
Extensions are the other case. Only 19% of Coventry's homes date from 2000 or later, so most extensions are joined to an older house, and the new slab rarely meets the old floor exactly. A lip at the doorway can be ground down so the finish runs through flat.
Grinding has a clear limit. It removes local high spots, but it cannot correct a floor that slopes or sags across a room. Taking enough off to do that would go too deep, and could leave a screed below its minimum depth. Instead, the high points are ground and the rest is brought up with compound, as covered on floor levelling in Coventry.
For very large floors or thick coatings, shot blasting or scarifying can be quicker, both covered under floor preparation. Garage conversions often start with a ground slab too; see the garage floor screed guide.
