Latex Screed Contractors in Hatfield

We lay latex screed in Hatfield where a floor needs a smooth, strong skim a few millimetres thick before sheet vinyl, LVT, lino or carpet. It is a two part compound, with latex taking the place of water when the cement based powder is mixed. Hatfield's flats make it a natural fit: a floor in a flat cannot gain much height, and old tiles, adhesive or a worn screed can sit under the new finish.

Latex over old finishes in Hatfield flats

A flat floor has to stay close to its existing height. Front doors, bathroom thresholds and kitchen plinths are all set to it, and in a block the build-up below may include acoustic layers that must be left alone; our insulation and membranes service covers those layers when a floor is rebuilt. Latex suits a flat because it adds only a few millimetres, bonds strongly and does not need the old surface removed.

What lies under the old carpet or vinyl in a Hatfield flat varies. It may be a cement screed with patches of adhesive, ceramic tiles in a kitchen or bathroom, or a calcium sulphate screed that was never sanded. Each is prepared differently. Sound, well bonded adhesive can stay and be primed, while loose or soft residue is scraped or ground off. Tiles are checked one by one, hollow ones lifted and the gaps filled, then the glaze is primed. A calcium sulphate base always has its laitance sanded away and a compatible primer applied before latex goes on.

Where a floor is timber, for instance upstairs in a house, the boards are overboarded with flooring grade plywood first. Latex never goes directly onto the boards.

Practical, hard-wearing finishes such as sheet vinyl, safety flooring in a bathroom, or rubber and lino in a hallway all show every flaw in the base, and a latex layer removes those flaws before the fitter starts.

Checks before latex in Hatfield terraces and homes

Latex is not a cure for a bad floor, so we check the base before pricing. Three findings change the plan.

Damp is the first. Latex will not hold back moisture rising through an old ground floor slab, and over a wet floor it can lose its bond and spoil the flooring above. We take readings, and a damp floor needs a membrane or a rebuilt floor first.

Springy timber is the second. Plywood fixed over boards that still bounce will crack the latex along its joints. The fix lies in the joists or boards, before any overboarding.

The third is a floor that falls or dips by more than a thin skim can take up. Latex is the wrong tool there, because poured deep it wastes material and tends to crack. The answer is a wider levelling job or a new screed; our Hatfield floor levelling and sand and cement screed pages cover those routes.

Smaller high spots, ridges and old floor paint are ground away before the latex, using our concrete floor grinding service, so the compound goes onto a clean, open surface.

We price latex after seeing the floor, and the figure is fixed in writing before work starts.

FAQs

Latex Screed in Hatfield: your questions

Does latex screed add much height to a flat floor?

Very little. It is normally laid a few millimetres thick, so front doors, thresholds and kitchen plinths in a Hatfield flat can usually stay as they are. That is the main reason it suits flats, where the build-up below, including any acoustic layer, cannot be changed. If a floor needs a much thicker correction, a different method is used.

Can latex go over a calcium sulphate screed?

Yes, once the screed is dry and prepared. The laitance on top is sanded off, the moisture is tested, and a primer compatible with calcium sulphate goes on before the latex. Leaving out that primer is a common reason latex lifts. On a Hatfield flat with a calcium sulphate floor, this step is built into our price.

Will latex screed stop a damp floor?

No. Latex is a smoothing layer, not a damp barrier, and moisture coming through the base will break its bond and ruin the flooring on top. We take readings before quoting. A damp Hatfield ground floor needs a membrane or a new build-up first, and only then a latex finish. We also lay latex screed in Potters Bar.
