Liquid screed for Hatfield flats and extensions
Liquid screed is a flowing mix, calcium sulphate or cement based, pumped from the mixer straight into the room. It finds its own level, so there is no hand ruling across a large floor, and a surface regularity of SR1 or SR2 is readily achievable.
That makes it a natural choice for a flat. A whole floor can be done in one visit, which matters in a shared block where noise and access are limited. It goes down thinner than sand and cement, from about 35mm floating in a home, so it adds less weight and height. Where a flat needs an acoustic screed, the layers beneath are set by the acoustic design, and the screed is laid to suit them.
Extensions are the other fit. A heated rear extension on a Hatfield terrace or semi is a single, open floor, and liquid screed flows fully around the pipes with no voids. That close contact gives a faster warm-up and better heating efficiency than a stiffer mix packed around the pipes by hand.
Homes built from 2000 to 2014 make up 21% of Hatfield's stock, and an extension to one of those houses usually has to match a modern, flat floor next door. Low shrinkage and far fewer joints help the new floor sit cleanly against the old. For a direct comparison of the two main screed types, read liquid vs sand and cement.
Getting the pump into Hatfield streets and blocks
Getting the screed from the road into the room takes a pump. A mixer lorry and pump park within reach of the room, and a hose carries the screed in. In a terraced street without drives, the lorry usually stands at the kerb for a few hours, and the hose runs along the path and through the front door. We check parking and any restrictions when we survey.
Flats need more planning. The hose can run up a stairwell or be lifted through a window to an upper floor, and communal areas are protected on the way. Where a block has a managing agent, we agree timings with them.
Before the pour, insulation and a membrane are laid and an edge strip goes round every wall. The screed is pumped to depth, dappled and left. It is usually walkable within 24 to 48 hours, which in a flat means the home is usable again quickly, though flooring waits for the screed to dry: roughly a day per mm for the first 40mm, then slower.
Where pipes run under the floor, screeding over underfloor heating in Hatfield has its own page. Welwyn Garden City is about 2.7 miles away, and we cover pumped floors in Welwyn Garden City too.
