Where pumped screed pays off in Welwyn Garden City
The pump earns its keep on broad floors without many walls or steps in the way. Rear extensions and kitchen knock-throughs, which are common across the town, give exactly that kind of space, often with one long run of floor from the old house into the new room. One pour reaches every corner, the surface comes up to SR1 or SR2 without much trouble, and so little shrinkage means fewer joints, by a wide margin, than a hand-laid floor.
Depth is the other advantage. In a house, liquid screed floating on insulation can be about 35mm thick; sand and cement needs about 65mm. On an extension that has to line up with the floor of the original house, that difference in depth can decide whether the levels work without raising thresholds.
The Wheat Quarter, with approval for 1,454 units, mainly homes, points the same way on a bigger scale. Large new residential schemes are usually designed around a flowing screed over insulation, often with heating pipes clipped down before the pour.
Two types are made: one bound with calcium sulphate, one with cement. The choice turns on whether the floor might see water and how quickly the flooring is due. For the calcium sulphate type in depth, see anhydrite and calcium sulphate screed; to weigh pumped against hand-laid, read liquid or sand and cement: a comparison.
Getting the hose into Welwyn Garden City homes
We set the mixer and pump up outside and lay a hose in through whichever door is closest to the room. It can travel along a hallway, round corners and up a staircase to a flat, provided the route is clear and protected. If the only place to park is a restricted bay or a shared service road, tell us when you ask for a price so the set-up can be planned. For a fuller picture of the set-up, see how our screed pumping works.
On pour day the room should already have edge strip along each wall, insulation covered by a membrane taped at every seam, and open doorways dammed. We go over all of it before starting; one gap in the membrane and screed can leak out or stick to what it should float above.
A floor you can walk across after a day or two is still wet inside, so the covering waits until a moisture test shows the screed is within the flooring manufacturer's limit. Our drying time guide works on about one day for each millimetre up to 40mm deep, and more beyond it.
