Where pumped liquid screed fits Hoddesdon homes
Pumping pays off where a floor is broad and open, without many walls breaking it up. A rear extension that opens into the kitchen, a knocked-through ground floor or a new build plot all give it room to flow out to a level surface without a string of doorways and steps in the way. Across Hoddesdon, 18% of homes were built since 2000, and newer houses are often built with insulated ground floors that suit a flowing screed.
The post-war and later semis and terraces are a different case. Their original ground floors are usually solid, and an extension on the back needs its new floor to meet the old one at precisely the right height. Liquid screed helps because the depth is fixed by levels set out before the pour, and the finished surface readily reaches SR1 or SR2 under a 2m straightedge with little extra work.
Depth drives both cost and drying. On insulation boards in a Hoddesdon house, the thinnest floating pour we would put down is about 35mm. Allow about one day of drying for each millimetre up to 40mm, and longer for every millimetre beyond that. To work back from your flooring date, see screed drying times explained.
There are two main types to pick from, one based on calcium sulphate and one on cement, and which suits you comes down to the room and what flooring goes over it. Where a specification names a CA grade, read our anhydrite and flow screed page for the detail.
Getting the hose to the room in Hoddesdon
Because the mixer and pump never come indoors and the screed reaches the room along a hose, the first thing we ask about a Hoddesdon pour is how we get in. A house with a drive in EN11 or EN10 is straightforward: the lorry and pump stand off the road and the hose runs through the side gate or the front door.
Flats take more planning. The hose may need to climb a stairwell or pass through a communal entrance, and the managing agent may want notice, floor protection and a set working window. Streets with tight on-street parking need a clear space for the delivery and the pump for a few hours. Tell us which floor the room is on and where a lorry can stop when you ask for a price, and the hose run is planned from that.
If the room is small or awkward, a hand-laid sand and cement screed for smaller rooms can make more sense than bringing in a pump at all. We lay liquid screed in towns around Hoddesdon too, including liquid screed in Cheshunt. One thing we cannot do is hire you a pump or mixer by itself.
