Self Levelling Screed and Floor Levelling in Hoddesdon

Self levelling compound is how we flatten uneven Hoddesdon floors, taking a tired screed or slab and giving it a smooth surface fit for LVT, vinyl, big tiles or engineered wood. The local point is how the floors have aged. Terraced houses make up 26% of homes here, and in older houses a ground floor can dip, slope or step at the join with an extension. Most of that can be corrected with a few millimetres of compound.

Levelling Hoddesdon floors before LVT and large tiles

Thin, stiff floor finishes show every flaw underneath. Every small ridge or hollow ends up visible through LVT and sheet vinyl, and a large format tile laid over a dip will rock and may crack. Under BS 8204 the test is simple: rest a 2m straightedge on the floor and see how big a gap opens under it. SR1 tolerates 3mm, SR2 tolerates 5mm and SR3 tolerates 10mm, and the thin sheet products going into Hoddesdon kitchens and hallways tend to ask for SR1.

Typical compound depths run from roughly 2mm to about 10mm, though certain products can be poured thicker. It flows out over a primed base and dries quickly, so the flooring fitter can often start soon after. Which primer we use depends on what is underneath: sand and cement, bare concrete, calcium sulphate and old tiles all take different ones.

A common case in Hoddesdon's post-war and later housing is the join between the original house and a newer extension, where two floors built years apart meet at slightly different heights. Compound feathered across the join brings them into one plane before a continuous floor goes down.

Not every floor should be levelled. If the screed is loose, hollow or cracked through, compound poured on top can crack and debond. Then it needs screed repairs first or a new screed, and we will say so. Where the base needs cleaning back or old adhesive removing, see our floor preparation service.

Shop and office refits at Tower Centre and Pindar Road

Commercial refits bring their own pressure. When a unit in the Tower Centre or Fawkon Walk changes hands, the incoming tenant usually wants the floor flat and ready for new finishes inside a short fit-out window, and compound is often the quickest way to get there. Choosing a fast drying compound keeps the fit-out on schedule.

On the Hoddesdon Business Park campus off Pindar Road, including the New England Industrial Estate, Trident Industrial Estate and Optima Business Park, an office area being refitted inside a unit may need levelling before carpet tiles or vinyl go down. The production floors are a heavier job, where grinding a concrete floor or a high strength screed may be the right answer rather than a thin compound.

Two things sit outside our work: sanding timber floors, and selling bags of compound to anyone planning to lay it themselves. We prepare, prime and lay the compound ourselves, then hand over a flat, sound base for the flooring contractor. If the room has pipes in the floor, read about screed over underfloor heating in Hoddesdon before planning the flooring.

FAQs

Floor Levelling in Hoddesdon: your questions

Can self levelling compound fix a badly uneven floor?

Only up to a point. Most compounds go down somewhere between 2mm and 10mm, and a few products can be laid deeper. When a floor is out by a lot more than that, or the screed is loose and hollow, a new screed is the fix. Piling compound thick onto a floor that needed rescreeding tends to end in cracks and debonding.

How flat does a floor need to be for LVT?

LVT and sheet vinyl manufacturers generally want the base smooth and very flat, commonly to SR1 in BS 8204: no gap greater than 3mm beneath a 2m straightedge. Small ridges, trowel marks and hollows show through thin flooring. Normally that is achieved by priming the floor and skimming it with compound.

How soon can flooring go down after levelling a Hoddesdon shop?

Fast drying compounds can often take floor coverings within a day or so, which suits a short shop fit-out in the town centre. The exact time depends on the product, its depth, the temperature and the base underneath. We choose the compound around your programme and tell you when the flooring contractor can start.
