Levelling floors in Cheshunt homes before new flooring
In houses of the 1970s to 1990s, and in the post-war estates before them, the concrete floors under old carpet are rarely flat enough for modern finishes. Slabs dip at the edges, doorways carry ridges where old flooring stopped, and chases cut for pipes or cables were filled roughly. LVT and sheet vinyl follow every one of those marks.
Self levelling compound corrects that. The floor is cleaned first and primed to suit the base, and then the compound is poured and spread so it settles flat, normally at about 2mm to 10mm, though some products go deeper. Done properly it can meet SR1, which thin sheet flooring often requires: no gap above 3mm beneath a 2m straightedge. The looser BS 8204 classes allow 5mm for SR2 and 10mm for SR3.
Extensions add a join to deal with. A new kitchen or garden room slab rarely finishes at exactly the old floor's level, and a feathered layer of compound across both removes the step.
Knowing when compound is the wrong answer is part of the job. A floor with cracks running right through it, hollow spots, or more unevenness than compound can safely take needs a new screed, because deep pours of compound on such a floor can crack and debond. Our sand and cement screed in Cheshunt page covers relaying, and concrete floor repair deals with damaged slabs.
Refits at Theobalds Business Park and Brookfield
Commercial floors in Cheshunt centre on two sites: Theobalds Business Park, where Google opened its first UK data centre in 2025, and the Brookfield retail park, which is set to grow as Brookfield Riverside. Data halls, retail units and trade premises all need flat, hard wearing floors.
When a shop or office is refitted, lifting the old covering exposes adhesive residue, patched areas and joints that are out of level. That surface has to be ground or shot blasted clean before any compound goes on, which our floor preparation work covers. After priming, fast drying compound takes the floor to whatever flatness class the new covering needs, so the fit-out stays on programme.
Where the floor has to be hard wearing in its own right, rather than a base for a covering, levelling compound is not enough. High strength screed or concrete floor grinding are the options there; see commercial screeding for larger areas. Shops along the High Street and Turners Hill go through the same sequence on a smaller scale when a unit changes hands.
