Where liquid screed fits Church Langley and Newhall
The pump earns its money where a floor is big and open. On the newer homes at Church Langley and Newhall, a flowing screed over insulation and heating pipes is the build-up most likely to be specified. It pours across the whole area in one go and settles flat and dense, reaching SR1 or SR2 without much fuss. Hardly any shrinkage means hardly any joints, far fewer than the traditional hand-floated method would leave you with.
Older houses benefit too. When one of Harlow's post-war terraces gets a rear extension and the old kitchen is opened into it, the result is a wide floor where a pump pays for itself. Floating on insulation, a domestic pumped floor can be as shallow as about 35mm where sand and cement would want about 65mm, so the extension can line up with the original kitchen floor without a step.
Flats are a strong case as well. They make up 26% of Harlow's homes, and carrying sand and cement up stairs is slow and heavy, whereas a pump hose simply runs up to the flat.
Liquid screed comes in calcium sulphate and in cement based versions. Which one a Harlow room gets is decided by what it is used for and what goes on top, and our Harlow anhydrite screed page explains the calcium sulphate kind. Still undecided for your Harlow floor? Our comparison of liquid and sand and cement screed sets the two methods side by side.
Reaching the room with a pump in Harlow
Our mixer and pump set up on the drive or at the kerbside, and the hose takes the screed indoors from there. It will snake along a hall, turn corners and climb a communal stairwell, provided the way through is cleared and sheeted.
On some streets the lorry may not be able to park right outside the door. Tell us how far the nearest place to stand a lorry is from the front or back door, and whether the path runs through a shared area. With that, the route gets mapped out in advance; how our screed pumping works covers the detail.
The room must be ready. Every wall needs its edge strip, the insulation needs its membrane laid with seams taped, and each doorway needs a dam. Our crew looks over all three before a drop of screed goes in.
Drying is a separate question from walking. Walking across it is fine within a couple of days, yet the flooring has to wait for a moisture reading that says the screed is dry. As a working figure, give it a day per millimetre of thickness until you reach 40mm, with drying slowing down after that. Got a second property just up the road?
