Concrete Floor Grinding Contractors in Herne Bay

K & B grinds concrete and screed floors in Herne Bay as preparation for the next layer. Diamond heads, always run with dust extraction, take off high spots, ridges, laitance, old glue, paint and thin coatings. What is left is bare, firm concrete ready for levelling compound, screed, new flooring or a resin finish laid by someone else. Our own team does the grinding; we do not hire out grinders or sell tooling. Herne Bay is about 77 miles east of our Slough base.

Workshop and unit floors around Eddington Business Park

Commercial units change hands, and every new occupier inherits the old floor. A unit at Eddington Business Park, on the former Eddington Farm site, might come with painted concrete, glue left by carpet tiles, or a ridge where a partition used to stand. The industrial estates on the edge of Herne Bay, where firms make kitchen furniture and factory machinery, have workshop slabs that can carry worn coatings, fixings and lips left by removed equipment.

None of that should sit under a new finish. A grinder carries rotating diamond heads that cut the top of the slab away in thin passes, removing paint, thin coatings, adhesive residue and trowel marks and taking ridges and lips between bays back down. The result is open, clean concrete that primers and compounds can grip.

If the new occupier wants a resin floor, a resin specialist lays it after we have finished, as we do not install resin or polished concrete ourselves. Our part ends with a prepared surface, and when the unit then needs bringing flat for carpet tiles or vinyl, the next step is levelling a Herne Bay unit floor.

For a very large area, or a coating too thick to grind economically, shot blasting or scarifying can be the faster method, and both come under our floor preparation work. We say which method fits once we have the floor size and a description of what is on it. Once the commercial and community buildings at Strode Farm are built, their floors may need the same preparation before finishes go down.

Extensions, garages and lifted carpet in Herne Bay homes

Grinding is useful in houses as well as units. Extensions are the usual reason. Where a new slab meets the original floor, a lip can run along the line of the old back wall, and a long run of tiles or LVT would show it. Grinding takes the high side down so the join can be skimmed and the flooring carried straight through. Semi-detached houses, 22% of Herne Bay's homes, are a typical place for that kind of rear extension.

Lifting old carpet or vinyl is another. Underneath there is usually hardened adhesive, sometimes black and brittle, sometimes still tacky. New adhesive and compound will not bond reliably to it, so it is ground back to sound concrete, after which latex screed for Herne Bay floors can give a new sheet finish its smooth base.

Garages being turned into rooms often have oil stains, paint or a dusty, weak top. Grinding opens the surface so the new build-up holds.

There are limits. Grinding removes local high spots; it does not correct a floor that falls or sags across the whole room, which needs the high spots ground and then levelling or a new screed. Taking too much off a screed can leave it thinner than its minimum depth, so we measure first.

Dust needs controlling as well. Silica is present in concrete, screed and tile, and grinding releases it as fine dust you should not breathe. We grind only with extraction connected and seal off the rooms next door.

FAQs

Concrete Floor Grinding in Herne Bay: your questions

Will grinding make a Herne Bay garage floor level?

It will remove bumps, ridges and the weak top skin, but it cannot fix a garage slab that slopes or sits lower than the house. In a Herne Bay garage conversion we grind the slab clean, then build it up with insulation and screed or a levelling layer to meet the house floor, and price both stages together.

Is concrete floor grinding dusty?

Without extraction it would be, and the dust contains silica, which is harmful to breathe. Our grinders always run with dust extraction connected, and we sheet off doorways and protect adjoining rooms. Tell us which parts of the house or unit will stay in use, and we plan the work around them.

Can I hire your floor grinder for a weekend?

No. We are a contractor: we grind floors ourselves and neither hire out our grinders nor sell diamond tooling. For a Herne Bay floor we price the grinding as a job, with the operator, extraction and any follow-on levelling in one written figure. For a floor in Canterbury, about 7 miles away, see floor grinding in Canterbury.
