Flattening Letchworth floors for LVT, vinyl and tile
Thin flooring shows everything underneath it. A ridge or hollow of a few millimetres will telegraph through LVT or sheet vinyl, and a dip under a large tile leaves it rocking or cracking. BS 8204 grades flatness by the gap under a 2m straightedge: SR1 is 3mm, SR2 is 5mm and SR3 is 10mm. Thin sheet flooring often asks for SR1.
Levelling compound closes that gap. Typical depths run from about 2mm to around 10mm, a few products go thicker, and it spreads itself into a smooth finish that takes flooring soon after. What lies under it matters too: sand and cement, bare concrete, calcium sulphate screed and old ceramic tiles each get their own primer.
Extensions on the Grange, Jackmans, Lordship and Manor Park estates are a typical case. When a new floor meets an older one, the two rarely line up perfectly, and a compound feathered across the join gives one continuous level for a floor that runs from the kitchen into the new room.
Some floors are beyond a skim, though. If the screed underneath is cracked, hollow or crumbling, compound on top can crack and debond. We will tell you when a floor needs screed repair work or a new screed instead. For a garden city cottage with a failed solid floor, a new sand and cement floor in Letchworth is usually the better route.
Office refits at Letchworth Business Park and Icknield Way
Commercial floors in Letchworth range from offices to production space. Letchworth Business Park covers more than 50 acres of both, and the employment areas along Works Road, Blackhorse Road, Icknield Way and the former Spirella site add further commercial floor space to that.
Office refits usually need the floor flat enough for carpet tiles or vinyl, and done within a tight fit-out programme. With a fast drying compound, the carpet tile or vinyl fitter can start soon after. Before the compound goes down, old adhesive, loose screed and contamination have to come off, which is part of our floor preparation service.
Production and warehouse floors are a heavier job. A thin compound will not stand up to forklift traffic, and those floors call for concrete repair, grinding or a high strength screed instead.
We do not sand wooden floors or sell products for DIY levelling. We prepare, prime and lay the compound with our own team, then hand over a flat base ready for flooring. For a nearby comparison, see floor levelling in Baldock.
