Liquid Screed Contractors in Redditch

Across Redditch, our liquid screed goes by pump into rear extensions, flats, new build plots and knocked-through ground floors. Because it finds its own level as it is poured, you can usually walk on it after 24 to 48 hours, so the rest of the build is not held up. The obvious Redditch setting for it is the rear extension. On the new town estates of Matchborough, Winyates and Church Hill, homes now 40 to 50 years old are being extended at the back, and a wide new floor is exactly where a pumped screed saves time.

Where pumped screed suits Redditch floors

The bigger and more open the floor, or the more of it that carries heating pipes, the more sense a pumped screed makes. A kitchen extension that runs across the back of a new town terrace is a good example: one continuous floor, often with underfloor heating, and a fitter waiting to start. Pumping means a floor of that size is done in one day, and because the mix settles flat on its own there are far fewer joints than with hand laying.

It is not only the older estates. About 15% of Redditch homes date from 2000 onwards, and plots built in that era often have a flowing screed written into the specification from day one. Flats are another fit, with 13% of homes in purpose-built blocks, because a pumped screed can reach an upper floor through a hose rather than a barrow.

Depth is usually from about 35mm on a floating domestic floor and 40mm on a commercial one, with at least 25mm of cover over any heating pipes. Because it self-levels, a surface regularity of SR1 or SR2 is readily achievable, which makes life easier for whoever lays the tiles or LVT.

There are two families of liquid screed, one based on calcium sulphate and one on cement. Where your plans call for a CA grade, what CA grades mean for anhydrite flow screed explains the specification. If you are still deciding, compare the two approaches in liquid screed vs sand and cement.

Getting the hose into a Redditch extension

Nothing heavy comes indoors: the pump and mixer sit on the road or drive, and only the hose travels through to the room. On a semi or detached house with a side gate, that is usually a short, clear route. On a terrace, the hose often has to come through the house, so we protect floors and door frames along the way and agree the route before the pour. If your street has parking limits, or the house sits well back from where we could pull up, mention it when you ask for a quote.

An upstairs flat works on the same principle, as the hose goes up the stairwell or in through a window opening. We bring our own equipment for this as part of the job, through our screed pumping service, and we do not hire pumps out.

On the day we need the glazing and doors fitted so the room is sealed from the weather, plus the insulation, edge strip and membrane already down. Afterwards, keep the room closed while the screed sets and then ventilate it. As a rule of thumb it dries at roughly a day per millimetre up to 40mm deep, then more slowly, and how long screed takes to dry goes into the detail.

FAQs

Liquid Screed in Redditch: your questions

How thick does liquid screed need to be in a Redditch extension?

Laid floating over insulation in a house, liquid screed is normally 35mm at minimum. Put heating pipes underneath and you need 25mm or more on top of them, so the finished screed usually ends up 45 to 50mm thick. The finished height has to line up with the floor in the existing house, so we check that level before setting the depth.

Can liquid screed be pumped into an upstairs flat in Redditch?

Yes, provided the hose can reach. It runs from the pump at street level up the stairs, or in through an opening, to the flat, and the screed is laid as it would be on a ground floor. Tell us the floor level, how far the parking is from the entrance and any building management rules when you ask for a price.

Does the room need to be sealed before a liquid screed pour?

Yes, in the sense that the glazing and outside doors must be in to keep out wind and rain, and the plasterer must have finished any wet work. Draughts and direct sun in the first day can affect the surface, so the room is kept closed while the screed sets and then ventilated to help it dry. Other trades should stay off the floor until it is walkable.
