Liquid Screed Contractors in Royston

Royston is a young town in housing terms: 28% of its homes have gone up since 2000, and new phases off Newmarket Road are exactly the sort of development where pumped liquid screed is widely specified. We pump and finish it for those homes, for open-plan ground floors and for extensions. On older houses it tends to go into extensions and knock-throughs, where a big floor has to be poured flat within a day.

Where liquid screed earns its place in Royston

Because it leaves the mixer through a hose and flattens itself out, liquid screed earns its keep wherever floor area and flatness count for most. Three kinds of Royston job fit that description.

New housing comes first. Building on land north of Newmarket Road is the kind of development where a pumped liquid floor is widely specified, and an application for up to 325 homes around Burloes Cottages shows the eastern side still growing. Each plot normally gets its screed over insulation, often with heating loops, and the builder ends up with a flat floor across the plot in a single visit, with few joints.

Next is the back extension on a 1970s, 1980s or 1990s house. Knock a kitchen and dining room together and the floor quickly grows large, and pouring it in one go avoids the joints and hand finishing a traditional mix would bring.

Third, flats, which make up 19% of Royston homes. The pump can drive screed up a hose to higher floors, provided the managing agent has agreed the route through the building first.

Whichever of these it is, a domestic floating screed starts at roughly 35mm deep, and SR1 or SR2 surface regularity is readily achievable. Flowing floors come with either a calcium sulphate binder or a cement one; on a Royston plot, the rooms and any heating settle which. For a side by side look, read liquid and sand and cement compared.

Pump set-up and drying on a Royston street

On pour day the mixer and pump sit on your drive or at the kerb, with the hose running to the room. A lorry and pump can easily block a narrow estate turning, so let us know about parking and any shared drive when you request a price. Where the hose crosses the house, hall floors and door frames are covered. The kit itself is explained on our screed pumping page, and pumps are not hired out without our team.

You can generally walk on the new floor 24 to 48 hours later, so plasterers and kitchen fitters carry on. Flooring is a slower wait. Count on something like one day per mm up to 40mm deep, more after that, then a test before anything is glued down. On a new Newmarket Road plot, that test is what tells the flooring fitter to start.

Royston pours are priced from the published 2026 range of £24 to £31 per m². A heated floor needs extra depth, explained on screed over underfloor heating pipes. Around 12 miles away, there is also liquid screed in Cambridge.

FAQs

Liquid Screed in Royston: your questions

Is liquid screed worth it for a small Royston extension?

That turns on floor area and access. On a big open floor, the speed and flatness usually justify bringing a pump. On a very small room, or a house with nowhere to park near the door, hand-laid sand and cement may be simpler and cheaper. We can price both side by side for your Royston extension so the choice is clear.

How long does liquid screed take to dry?

You can usually step onto it one or two days (24 to 48 hours) after we leave. Laying a floor finish takes far longer: think one day for each mm of the first 40mm, with thicker Royston extension floors slowing beyond that. Calcium sulphate liquid screed over heating can normally be force dried from about 7 days. Before flooring we test the floor itself instead of trusting the date.

Can liquid screed be laid on a new-build plot in Royston?

It can. Many new homes are designed around a pumped flowing screed laid over insulation and underfloor heating. We follow the developer's specification, set up the build-up, pour plot by plot and leave written drying advice. Send plot numbers, areas and depths for a price on the whole programme.
