Awkward bases under Uckfield kitchen and bathroom floors
Lift an old kitchen floor and the base is rarely just concrete. In an Uckfield house it might be ceramic tiles from an earlier refit, a timber floor with plywood screwed over it, or a slab scarred by pipe runs and patching. Thin finishes such as LVT and sheet vinyl will show every one of those joins and edges unless something smooth goes between.
That something is often latex screed. It arrives as two parts: a cement based powder and a latex liquid that is used in place of water. Mixed together, they make a compound that spreads to a few millimetres and keeps a slight flexibility once cured, which helps it hold onto tile and plywood as well as concrete.
The older houses nearer the High Street show where caution is needed. Where an original solid floor there is due to be lifted and rebuilt with a membrane and insulation, latex is no substitute for that work. On the 1970s to 1990s estates, where ground floors can be cracked or poorly insulated, the same test applies: latex goes on a floor that is sound, not one that is failing.
Sound tiles are cleaned, abraded and primed. Plywood must be flooring grade and fixed firmly, and latex never goes on bare boards. Firm old adhesive can sometimes stay; soft or thick residue is removed by grinding the Uckfield slab clean.
Primers, damp and limits for latex in Uckfield
Getting latex to stay down is mostly about the base and the primer. Each surface takes its own: one for porous concrete, another for glazed tile, another for plywood. Ridgewood Farm's new homes come with flowing screeds, and where one of those is calcium sulphate it needs its laitance removed and a compatible primer before latex goes near it.
Damp is tested before any work. Latex is not a membrane, and moisture rising through an old floor will break its bond and spoil the finish above. A floor that fails the test needs a membrane or a rebuild first, and our Uckfield sand and cement screed page covers relaying.
A bouncy timber floor is the other refusal. Overboarding cannot stop joists or boards that move, and movement cracks a thin layer. Fixing the structure comes first.
Finally, latex is for floors that are nearly flat already. A room that is badly out of true needs fresh screed or a deeper levelling product, which the levelling page for Uckfield explains, and latex can then follow as the smooth top layer if the finish calls for it.
