Refit floors around Brent Cross Cricklewood
Brent Cross, the 1970s shopping centre, now belongs to the Brent Cross Cricklewood scheme, which is adding offices, and retail units and offices there are refitted in turn. When the old flooring comes up, the slab underneath tends to carry the marks of past fit-outs: patches of carpet tile adhesive, floor paint, worn coatings and ridges where an old screed was patched.
Our grinders take that surface back with diamond discs that cut the top of the slab away in thin passes. Because the machine cuts rather than breaks, the amount removed stays under control, and the ground surface is left clean and open, so primer and compound can soak in and grip.
What follows is usually a levelling coat and then carpet tiles, vinyl or LVT. A tenant may want a resin floor laid by a specialist instead, and in that case we prepare the slab to their brief and hand it over. Resin and polished concrete are not part of what we do.
Grinding suits patches, ridges and thin layers. On a very large floor, or where a coating is too thick to cut back sensibly, shot blasting or scarifying strips it faster, and both sit within our floor preparation and shot blasting service. Bigger repairs to a slab, or a new wearing screed, go through commercial screeding instead.
Extensions, garages and dust in Barnet homes
Where a new rear extension meets the old house, the two floors rarely line up to the millimetre. A lip of a few millimetres at the opening can be ground down so the new finish runs through without a step. Garages heading for conversion often have painted floors, and paint must come off before screed or compound will bond; the guide to screeding a garage floor picks up from there. In older houses, lifting carpet or vinyl can expose adhesive that needs grinding off too.
Grinding has a firm limit: it lowers high spots but cannot raise low ones. A floor that slopes or sags across a room gets its high points ground, then self levelling compound in Barnet or a new screed brings the rest true. On a screed we also keep an eye on depth, so grinding never leaves it thinner than its minimum.
Dust is controlled throughout. Silica is present in concrete, screed and tile, and cutting any of them throws up a fine dust that can reach deep into the lungs. We grind only with extraction running, sheet off doorways and keep the rest of the home closed while we work. Our own team does the work, and we do not offer grinders or diamond tooling for sale or rental.
