Where pumped screed pays off in Chesham extensions
Nobody trowels a liquid screed flat. It is poured and levels itself, so a big open-plan kitchen and family room in Chesham can be finished in a few hours instead of a couple of days. Reaching SR1 or SR2 surface regularity is routine, which suits large format tiles and click flooring. Shrinkage is very low, so even a wide Chesham kitchen gets by with far less jointing than barrow-mixed screed would need.
It saves depth, too. Floating in a house, liquid screed starts at about 35mm where sand and cement needs about 65mm, and that saving can be what lets the extension meet the old house at the door with no step.
Flats suit it as well. They account for 22% of Chesham's homes, and getting screed to a flat above street level means a hose up the stairwell rather than tonnes of sand and cement carried by hand.
So do newer houses. Of the town's homes, 14% have gone up since 2000, and a new plot with an insulated ground floor is an obvious place for flowing screed. Liquid screed is made with either a calcium sulphate or a cement binder; the first of these, with its grades, has its own anhydrite flow screed page. To weigh the two methods side by side, see liquid screed vs sand and cement.
Getting the hose from a Chesham street to the room
Our pump and mixer park on your drive or out on the road, and the screed travels in by hose through whichever door is closest. With a drive, that part is simple. Outside a terraced house, such as those in Newtown, the pump may have to park in the carriageway, so yellow lines, permit bays or a shared alley are worth mentioning when you ask for a quote. The hose can go along a hallway or up several flights of stairs, provided the route is clear and covered.
Edge strip goes round every wall, the insulation is covered by a membrane taped at its joints, and each doorway is dammed so the screed cannot escape. All of that has to be done before the pour, and we check it on the day.
Being able to walk on the floor is one thing; being able to lay on it is another. For the first 40mm, allow about a day per millimetre of depth, then longer, before a moisture test says the floor is ready. A separate guide explains why screed takes so long to dry.
