Old meets new in Earl Shilton kitchen diners
When a wall comes down between kitchen and dining room, the two floors on either side rarely match. One may be concrete, the other an older screed, and there is often a ridge where the wall stood. Add a rear extension and there is a third floor, laid years later, meeting the others at the old back door.
Thin floor coverings make those joins obvious. Thin LVT and vinyl show each bump beneath them. Large tiles rock or lip. Engineered boards creak over a dip. The answer is one continuous base, and on floors that are sound and dry that means a self levelling compound laid across the whole area.
We test the result with a 2m straightedge against BS 8204, which permits gaps of 3mm for SR1, 5mm for SR2 and 10mm for SR3. Plenty of thin sheet floorings ask for SR1.
Most compound is poured between 2mm and roughly 10mm, and a few products can be laid thicker. Each part of the floor may need its own primer, matched to concrete, sand and cement, calcium sulphate or old adhesive, before the compound is poured over the lot.
Homes built between 1973 and 1999 make up 23% of the town, and in any refit, old adhesive or thin tiles found under the existing flooring need removing first. Cracked or hollow patches are cut out through our screed repair service before the levelling pour.
When an Earl Shilton floor needs more than compound
Levelling compound smooths a sound floor. It does not rebuild a failed one.
If a floor is cracked, loose, damp or out by more than a compound can take, a deep pour is a false economy: it can crack and debond from a weak base. In the older terraces where solid floors have no membrane, lifting and relaying is usually the right call, and our sand and cement relaying service covers that.
Skip the groundwork and even a good compound will fail. Old paint, adhesive and coatings stop bonding, so they are ground off first with concrete floor grinding. Dust is then removed and the primer applied.
Flats make up 12% of homes in the town. Levelling in a flat needs care over the added thickness at door thresholds, and the building's sound insulation rules may affect which flooring goes on top.
Where a sound floor is out by a hair, a skim of latex screed a few millimetres thick may be enough. Either way, you get a straight answer on what your floor calls for.
