Extensions and kitchen diners in Earl Shilton semis
Knocking a kitchen and dining room into one space, then pushing the back wall out with an extension, leaves a floor that is wide, open and made of several parts. The new slab at the rear has to meet the existing floor exactly, and the whole area should finish as one flat surface. A pumped liquid screed does that in a single visit, with no joins between the parts.
Left to spread, it settles flat on its own, and an SR1 or SR2 finish is well within reach. Shrinkage is slight, so joints are needed much less often than on a hand-laid floor, a real help if big tiles are to run unbroken from the old kitchen into the new room.
Depth helps too. Floating over insulation in a house, a pumped screed can be laid from about 35mm, while a traditional mix wants about 65mm. When insulation has to fit under a finished floor that must line up with the hall, those extra millimetres matter.
Housing built since 2015 accounts for 9% of the town's homes, and an open-plan extension on one of those newer houses raises the same questions of level and flatness.
Pumped screed is made with one of two binders, calcium sulphate or cement. Grades for the calcium sulphate kind are explained under anhydrite screed in Earl Shilton. For a side-by-side look at both methods, see liquid versus traditional screed.
Pump access and preparation in Earl Shilton
Mixer and pump stay outdoors; only the hose comes in, through whichever door is closest to the room. A semi with a drive gives the pump somewhere to stand off the road, close to the door. Outside a red brick terrace near the conservation area, with no drive to use, it may have to stand in the road, so mention any parking rules when you enquire. The hose can travel a long way, but the route must be clear and protected. For the equipment itself, see how we pump screed.
Get the room set up first. That means edge strip fixed all round the walls, the insulation boards sheeted over with membrane and each seam taped, and a dam across every doorway to hold the screed in. A gap in the membrane lets screed run under the insulation and float it up, so we check it all on the day.
Do not mistake a floor you can stand on for a dry one. You can walk across it carefully within 48 hours, yet tiles, wood or vinyl have to wait until its moisture reading meets the figure the flooring maker sets.
