Floor Levelling and Self Levelling Screed in Hinckley

Uneven Hinckley floors get a pour of self levelling compound from us, so LVT, vinyl, big tiles and engineered wood lie flat and stay put. The figure behind much of this work is simple: 34% of Hinckley's homes are detached, and detached houses are often extended over the years, which leaves a join between old and new floors to be made good. Commercial refits are the other side of the job, from shop floors to warehouse offices.

Levelling floors in Hinckley houses before new finishes

Thin modern coverings show up every hollow in the floor beneath them. A thin LVT or vinyl will telegraph ridges and hollows straight through to the surface, and large format tiles rock or crack if the floor under them is out of flat. Levelling compound is how that base is corrected without laying a whole new screed.

BS 8204 measures flatness with a 2m straightedge laid on the floor. Under it, SR1 permits a 3mm gap, SR2 a 5mm one and SR3 one of 10mm. Many thin sheet finishes need SR1, which is why a floor that suits carpet can still need work before vinyl.

Most levelling sits in the range of about 2mm to 10mm, though certain products can go thicker. Cleaning and priming come first, and a cement screed, a concrete slab, a calcium sulphate screed and old tiles each need their own primer. Get that wrong and the compound can lift.

In a house, the usual trouble spot is where an extension floor meets the original one. The two slabs were laid years apart and rarely finish at quite the same height. Compound can feather that line out across a room. Where the gap is much deeper, or the old floor is cracked and loose, a new sand and cement screed or a proper screed repair is the honest answer, because deep pours of compound over a failing floor can crack and debond.

Shop and unit refits from The Crescent to Logix Park

Commercial floors change whenever a tenant does. A shop near The Crescent taking new flooring, an office fit-out at Hinckley Business Park on Brindley Road, or a mezzanine office in a unit at Harrowbrook, Logix Park, Sunnyside Industrial Estate or Greenfields Business Park may all need the existing floor brought flat before carpet tile, safety vinyl or LVT goes down.

Commercial levelling usually starts with the state of the old surface. Adhesive residue, paint and old tiles have to come off, and a dusty or weak concrete may need mechanical preparation. Our concrete floor grinding service opens up the surface so the primer and compound can bond.

Programme is the next concern. Fast drying compounds are available that keep a refit moving, and a levelled floor can often take the next trade far sooner than a new screed would. We agree the sequence with the fit-out team before we start, so the floor is not holding up electricians or joiners.

If the floor in a Hinckley unit is badly damaged, levelling alone will not fix it, and we will say so. The same service is available for shops and offices in Earl Shilton floor levelling and nearby towns.

FAQs

Floor Levelling in Hinckley: your questions

How deep can levelling compound be laid?

Compound is normally poured somewhere in the 2mm to 10mm range, give or take, and certain products are designed for more. Beyond that range a new screed is usually the better repair. Piling compound on deep to cover a floor that should really be replaced can end in cracking and a lost bond.

How flat does a Hinckley floor need to be for LVT or vinyl?

Thin sheet and plank floors normally need SR1, meaning a gap of 3mm at most under a 2m straightedge. Many older floors and extension joins fall short of that. Priming the base and pouring a thin layer of compound usually gets them there.

Is floor levelling the same as sanding a wooden floor?

No. Levelling is pouring a compound over a solid floor, with either a cement or a calcium sulphate base, to flatten it for a new covering. It is not wood floor sanding, which is a separate trade. If your floor is timber boards, ask about the options before booking.
