Concrete Floor Grinding in Newbury

Our own team grinds concrete and screed floors in Newbury with diamond heads, taking off high spots, ridges, laitance, old adhesive and floor paint so the next layer has a clean, sound surface to bond to. The clearest local case is commercial: warehouse and trade units on the Hambridge Road Industrial Estate and at Greenham Business Park, including the A34 Connect units, hold much of the town's warehouse and trade space, and a unit refitted for a new use needs its slab stripped back before new flooring goes down.

Grinding unit floors on the Hambridge Road Industrial Estate

A slab that has carried a business for years collects layers. Line markings and floor paint in a warehouse aisle, glue left from carpet tiles in an office, sealer by a trade counter and ridges where bays of concrete were poured at slightly different heights all stand between the bare slab and a new finish. A diamond grinder cuts through them in thin passes and leaves an open, clean surface.

That surface matters for whatever comes next. Levelling compound, a new screed and flooring adhesives all need to grip sound material, not a skin of paint or dust. When a unit at Greenham Business Park or on the Hambridge Road Industrial Estate is fitted out as an office, showroom or trade counter, grinding is usually the first stage of the floor work, followed by priming and smoothing compound to the class the flooring needs.

We grind as a contractor, and the machine stays with our crew. We do not sell or hire grinders or diamond tooling, and we do not lay resin or polished concrete, although a ground slab can be handed over to a resin installer ready for their system.

For very large areas, or coatings too thick to grind economically, shot blasting or scarifying may be quicker, and our shot blasting and preparation service covers those methods. If a refit uncovers a slab that is cracked or breaking up, it is repaired before any new layer goes on.

Extensions, garages and lifted floors in Newbury homes

Grinding is useful in houses too, usually in smaller doses. Where a new extension slab meets the original floor, a lip of a few millimetres often remains along the doorway. Grinding the high edge down, then feathering compound across the join, lets one finish run straight through. With 31% of Newbury's homes built since 2000, plenty of floors are young and sound, yet a ridge from the pour or a trowel mark can still show under thin LVT.

Older floors bring a different problem. Lift a carpet or a sheet of vinyl and hard, patchy adhesive is often left behind. Grinding takes it back to sound concrete so the new adhesive is not fighting the old. Garages being converted often carry oil stains and paint, and grinding opens the surface before the membrane, insulation and screed go on.

What grinding cannot do is level a floor that falls across a whole room. It takes off local high spots only, so where a floor dips or slopes over a large area we grind the peaks and then level or screed. Care is also needed not to grind a screed thinner than its minimum depth.

Dust is controlled at every step. Concrete, screed and tile contain silica, and cutting them releases fine respirable dust, so we only grind with extraction connected and sheet off rooms next to the work. For a site in neighbouring Thatcham, see floor grinding in Thatcham.

FAQs

Concrete Floor Grinding in Newbury: your questions

Can grinding make a sloping Newbury floor level?

No. A grinder removes material in thin layers from high spots, ridges and lips, so it improves local flatness but cannot correct a floor that runs downhill across a room. For that, the high points are ground first and the floor is then brought level with compound or a new screed. We measure with a straightedge before deciding which route the floor needs.

Is concrete floor grinding dusty?

Without extraction it would be, and the dust contains respirable crystalline silica, which is harmful to breathe. Our grinders run with dust extraction attached the whole time, and neighbouring rooms or parts of a unit are sheeted off. In an occupied Newbury office or shop, we agree working areas and times so staff are kept clear of the work.

Do you hire out floor grinders?

No. We are a screeding contractor, and grinding is a service our own team carries out as part of preparing a floor. We do not sell or hire grinders or diamond tooling. If you need a Newbury floor stripped back, we price the grinding and any levelling or screed that follows as one written job.
