Stripping office slabs at Green Park Business Park
An office floor that has been through two or three fit-outs is rarely clean underneath. Lift the carpet tiles at Green Park Business Park or Arlington Business Park and you may find layers of tackifier, patches of old compound, setting out marks and the odd strip of paint. New flooring adhesive will only hold as well as the layer it sits on, so that build-up has to go.
Diamond grinding removes it in a controlled way. Heads set with industrial diamonds spin against the slab and shave the top away in thin layers, taking off contamination and opening the surface so primer can soak in. The same pass knocks down ridges, trowel marks and lips where one section of slab meets another, which would otherwise show through thin finishes. Raised floor bases need a sound slab too, even though the finished floor never touches it.
Retail units work to tighter diaries. A shop fit-out around The Oracle may give the floor trades a short window between strip-out and flooring, and grinding can be planned in zones so part of a unit stays usable.
After grinding, the slab is ready for compound laid to an SR class, a new screed or the flooring itself. We are a contractor, not a tool shop: we do not sell or hire grinders or diamond tooling, and resin or polished concrete are left to specialists in those systems, with our ground surface ready for them.
Extensions, garages and old adhesive in Reading homes
In houses, grinding is normally a smaller, targeted job. Tilehurst and Caversham have plenty of semis suited to extending, and where a new extension slab meets the old floor, a raised edge at the opening is common. Grinding that lip down, then feathering compound across the join, gives one continuous floor.
Lifted floor coverings are the other common reason. Pull up old carpet or vinyl and there may be hard, patchy adhesive stuck to the concrete. Grinding takes it back to clean material, which a new floor needs, and saves hours of scraping. Garage conversions follow a similar pattern: oil, paint and dust are ground off before the membrane and screed go in.
Two limits apply. Grinding removes local high points; it cannot level a floor that falls across a whole room, which needs compound or a new floor screed once the peaks are down. And grinding a screed too far can leave it below its minimum depth, so we measure before and during the work.
Dust control is not optional. Concrete and screed contain silica, and grinding creates respirable crystalline silica dust that is harmful to breathe. Every grinder we run is connected to extraction, and rooms beside the work are sheeted. For a job beyond Reading, see concrete floor grinding in Wokingham.
