Grinding the join on Yateley wraparound extensions
A wraparound extension adds floor along two sides of the house, so the join between new and old can run for several metres. However carefully the new slab or screed is set, the two rarely end up exactly level, and a lip of a few millimetres is common. Under carpet it disappears. Under LVT, sheet vinyl or large tiles it shows as a line or a rocking edge.
Grinding is the tool for that lip. A machine with diamond heads spins against the surface and cuts the high side down in thin passes, along with ridges, trowel marks and laitance. Once the edge is taken off, a thin coat of compound over the whole area gives the finish one continuous plane.
What grinding cannot do is level a floor that falls across a whole room. Taking off enough material to correct a broad slope would be slow, and on a screed it could leave the layer thinner than its minimum depth. The usual sequence is to grind the high points and then fill the low areas, using levelling compound over the ground surface or a fresh screed.
Remodels sometimes uncover a bigger problem than a lip. If the original screed is hollow or crumbling, grinding will only expose more of it, and the answer is to break it out and relay. Where a screed has failed in patches, screed repairs may be enough. For large areas or thick coatings, shot blasting is the alternative, covered under floor preparation.
Glue, paint and dust in Yateley homes
Old floor coverings leave traces. Pull up carpet or vinyl and you may find black bitumen glue, hard yellow latex or a patchwork of residue that new primer will not hold to. Grinding takes it back to bare concrete or screed. Garages being turned into living space often have painted or oil stained slabs, and those are ground clean before any membrane, insulation or screed goes on.
Dust is the part to plan for. Grinding any slab, screed or tiled floor releases respirable crystalline silica, because all three contain silica, and that fine dust can damage the lungs. We grind only with extraction attached to the machine, hang sheeting across doorways and cover nearby surfaces. In a lived-in house in Frogmore, Darby Green or anywhere else in the town, that keeps the dust in the machine and out of the rest of the home.
The noise is real, so we agree working times with you. Grinding is also not a repair: cracked or broken concrete needs concrete floor repair before any surface work.
We price grinding in Yateley as a contractor's job, done by our own crew as part of preparing a floor, and the same applies to floor grinding in Farnborough.
