Concrete Floor Grinding in Farnborough

We grind concrete and screed floors in Farnborough with diamond heads to remove high spots, ridges, laitance, glue and old paint, leaving a sound, clean surface for the layer that follows. Our own team does it with dust extraction running throughout. In Farnborough the work spans research and office buildings beside Farnborough Airport, where refurbishment is planned, and houses where an extension or garage conversion meets the original floor. We prepare floors; resin, polished concrete and machine hire are not part of what we do.

Preparing refurbished floors at Cody Technology Park

Cody Technology Park, next to Farnborough Airport, is made up of offices, laboratories and research space, with submitted plans covering refurbishment as well as new building. Refurbishing buildings of that kind usually means stripping floors back. Laboratory floors may carry old sealers or painted coatings; offices have carpet tile adhesive; plant areas may have paint lines and oil.

A grinder fitted with diamond segments takes these off by shaving the surface in shallow passes. Each pass removes only a thin layer, so a coating can come off without digging into the slab beneath. The same machine knocks down ridges, trowel marks and the step where one pour meets another.

What is left is a bare, open surface. That is important because primers and levelling compounds bond to clean concrete, not to old paint. On a fit-out the grinding is usually followed by levelling compound in Farnborough and then the new finish, or by a specialist resin contractor if the specification calls for resin.

Southwood Business Park is another employment site in the borough, and a unit refit there would follow the same approach: survey the floor, test any coating, grind with extraction and leave the floor ready for the next trade.

Large areas or thick coatings may call for a different tool. Shot blasting and scarifying can be quicker on wide open floors, and we cover those through our floor preparation work. Where concrete is spalled or broken, concrete floor repair comes first.

Extensions and garages on Farnborough's post-war streets

Homes are the other half of the work. On a post-war semi or terrace in Farnborough, a rear extension slab rarely finishes exactly level with the old floor, and a raised edge along the join will show through LVT or tiles. Grinding takes that lip down cleanly.

It only goes so far. A grinder cuts away high points; it cannot lift a low one. If the floor dips or falls across a room, we grind the proud areas and then lay a compound or screed to bring it flat. Screeds also have a minimum depth, and over-grinding can leave one too thin, so we measure before cutting.

Garages being turned into rooms bring oil, paint and a rough slab. A clean, ground surface lets the insulation, membrane and screed above sit on a sound base. Homes built since 2000 make up 17% of Farnborough's housing, and even their newer floors can hold curing residues or laitance that has to come off before tiling.

Lifting old carpet or vinyl often exposes adhesive. Grinding removes it, and a thin latex screed can then give the new finish a smooth bed.

Silica dust is the hazard. Concrete, screed and tile all contain it, and the fine dust grinding produces is harmful to breathe. We grind only with extraction connected, and we seal doors and sheet adjoining rooms.

FAQs

Concrete Floor Grinding in Farnborough: your questions

How much concrete does grinding remove?

Only as much as the job needs. A grinder takes the surface off in thin layers, so removing paint or adhesive may take very little, while knocking down a ridge between bays takes more in that spot. On a screed we check the depth first, because grinding too far can leave it thinner than its minimum. If a floor needs another approach, we say so before starting.

Is grinding needed before laying LVT on a Farnborough concrete floor?

Not always. If the slab is clean, sound and flat enough, a primer and levelling coat may be all it needs. Grinding comes in when there is laitance, old adhesive, paint, a sealer or a raised edge on the surface. We check the floor and tell you which steps apply before a price is fixed.

Can you grind a floor ready for resin at Southwood Business Park?

Yes, as the preparation stage. We grind the slab to a clean, open surface with dust extraction, and the resin contractor then lays their system. We do not apply resin or polished concrete ourselves, and we do not hire out grinders. Send the unit size and the resin maker's preparation requirement, and you get a written price within 24 hours.
