Farnborough extensions and newer homes that suit liquid screed
Semis are 33% of Farnborough's housing. When one of these post-war houses gains a rear extension, the new floor is usually built with insulation from the start, and a liquid screed over it gives a flat, dense surface across the whole room in one pour. Getting SR1 or SR2 regularity is straightforward with it, which saves preparation before engineered wood, tiles or LVT.
It suits a full floor replacement too. Where an old slab has been broken out and insulation and a membrane laid, a pumped screed at about 35mm leaves more height for insulation than a 65mm sand and cement screed. In a Farnborough semi, where the new floor must line up with the doors already hung, those extra millimetres count.
Open-plan rooms are the third case. Where a knock-through joins a kitchen, dining room and hall into one space, a pumped screed covers the combined floor in one pour, without the bay joints a hand-laid floor would need between rooms.
Liquid screed comes in both calcium sulphate and cement based forms, and the choice depends on whether the floor may get wet; the calcium sulphate screed page for Farnborough deals with its grades and preparation. If you are weighing it against a traditional floor, how liquid and sand and cement compare sets out the differences. For a larger floor, such as an office refit, our screed pumping service covers the equipment side.
Setting up the pump on a Farnborough street
Pump and mixer sit outside; the screed travels to the room along a hose. What decides the setup is where the mixer can stand. A driveway makes it easy. On a terraced road, the truck may need to park on the street for a few hours, so mention permit zones, narrow roads or shared passages when you ask for a price.
Through the house, the hose wants an uncluttered path with protection along it. It can run through a hallway or up a staircase to an upper floor, which is useful for flats, where carrying bags of sand and cement upstairs would be slow and heavy.
We get the room ready before any screed turns up. Edge strip around the walls, a membrane over the insulation with joints taped, and dams across doorways all stop the screed going where it should not. We check the build-up when we arrive and put right anything that would cause a problem.
Once it is poured, shut the doors and keep draughts out for the first day or two. The first 40mm loses moisture at roughly a millimetre each day, then more slowly, and flooring waits for a moisture test. Planning the rest of the job around that is covered in our guide to screed drying times.
