Pumped screed for Frimley extensions and open-plan rooms
Liquid screed is most useful on large, open floors. When a Frimley kitchen extension turns a separate kitchen and dining room into one open-plan space, the whole floor can be poured in a single session. Because it finds its own level, SR1 or SR2 flatness is well within reach, and with so little shrinkage the room needs only a few joints, far fewer than a hand-laid floor.
Its flatness also helps at the join. With the level taken from the existing floor, a self-levelling screed finishes to a consistent height across the new room, making it easier to meet the older slab without a step.
It is also thinner. Over insulation, a domestic pour can start at about 35mm, while sand and cement would need about 65mm. That leaves more of the available height for insulation boards, which matters because floors from the 1950s to the 1990s often have little or none.
Flats make up 13% of Frimley's homes. On an upper floor, the hose climbs the stairs, which is quicker and lighter work than carrying sand and cement.
Two kinds of liquid screed are in use, calcium sulphate and cement based, and the room decides which. The calcium sulphate type is covered on our anhydrite flow screed page; for heated floors, see screeding over underfloor heating.
Getting the pump hose into Frimley houses
The pump and mixer stay outside, ideally on the drive, and a hose runs to the room through a side gate, the garage or the front door. It can reach a long way and climb stairs, but it needs a clear, protected route. Let us know early if there is no drive for the pump or you share one with a neighbour.
Liquid screed will escape through any gap, so the room is sealed first: perimeter strip along each wall, the membrane taped where sheets overlap and turned up at the edges, and a dam across every doorway. On a knock-through, the opening into the existing house is dammed so the screed stays in the new area. Our team goes over every one of these points when they turn up.
Do not mistake a firm surface for a dry one. You can step on it after 24 to 48 hours; flooring, though, has to wait for a moisture reading, and drying takes around one day per millimetre up to 40mm and longer past that. The drying times guide explains this, and liquid screed in Camberley is available on the same terms.
