Where pumped screed suits Godalming homes
Big, open floors are where liquid screed pays off. It is mixed off site, pumped through a hose and spread so it finds its own level, so one visit can cover a whole ground floor. That makes it a natural fit for the 25% of Godalming homes built since 2000, and for any house gaining a wide rear extension or a knocked-through kitchen.
Flatness is what you are paying for. A pumped pour reaches SR1 or SR2 without much trouble, meaning a 2m straightedge shows a gap of 3mm or 5mm at most, and that suits large tiles, LVT and engineered boards. Because it shrinks so little, the floor needs far fewer joints than a traditional one.
How deep it goes is set by the layers below. On insulation, as a floating floor in a house, expect from about 35mm. Where heating pipes run through it, at least 25mm has to sit on top of them, for roughly 45 to 50mm overall. Allow about a day of drying for each millimetre up to 40mm and longer beyond that, which is why a thinner floor is ready for its finish sooner.
Not every Godalming room suits it. A small bathroom, a garage or a floor laid to falls usually goes better in hand-laid sand and cement. Torn between them? Our liquid or sand and cement comparison lays out what you gain and lose with each.
Getting the hose to the room in Godalming
Every pumped pour starts outside the house. The mixer and pump have to stand somewhere close, and the hose must get to the room without crossing a busy road or blocking a neighbour. Where the house has a drive, there is usually nothing to solve.
Terraced streets take more planning. Around 19% of Godalming homes are terraced, and where the room is at the back, the hose may need to run through the house or along a shared path. Tell us about parking restrictions, narrow lanes or a side gate when you ask for a price.
Upper floors and flats are workable too. The hose can climb a stairwell or pass through a window, and the screed arrives at the same flat finish on the second floor as on the ground. For a larger block, our screed pumping service explains how longer hose runs are handled.
The room has to be weathertight before we pour, the edge strip fixed and every membrane joint taped so nothing seeps underneath. We check all of this before starting.
