Screeding in Godalming

Ask K & B Screeding to floor a room in Godalming and our first question is when the house went up. Homes here are spread unusually evenly across the decades, from 1880s Crownpits to houses finished in the last few years, and the age of a building, plus whatever lies under its floor today, points to the screed. We pump liquid screed, hand-lay sand and cement, cover heating pipes and level floors that only need flattening. Slough, where our base is, lies about 24 miles to the north, and you get a fixed written price before anything starts.

Which screed fits which part of Godalming

Census 2021 counted 10,450 people in the Godalming built-up area, and their homes record each stage of the town's growth. Around 21% were built before 1919 and almost as many since 2015, so one street can need a very different floor from the next.

Begin at Crownpits. Its Victorian houses tend to have a solid floor sitting on bare ground with nothing beneath it to stop damp, or old timber boards that are past saving. Redoing the kitchen or bathroom is when that floor comes out, gets insulated and is rebuilt, and hand-laid sand and cement for older houses is easy to fit around the small rooms and awkward thresholds of a house like that.

Ockford Ridge poses a different problem. Its inter-war council houses often gain a rear extension, and the new insulated floor then has to line up with an older one that has no insulation at all. For a broad extension or a knocked-through kitchen, pumped liquid screed finds its own level and takes foot traffic after 24 to 48 hours.

Planning to warm that room from below? Then how much screed covers the pipes, and how slowly the system is first brought up to temperature, decide the result far more than which product goes in, as our page on heated floors in Godalming explains. Newer plots and flats may carry a calcium sulphate specification, which our anhydrite flow screed page covers.

Plenty of Godalming floors can also stay where they are. If yours is solid but bumpy, a self levelling coat costs less and goes on faster than a fresh screed.

Timing a pour and parking a pump around Godalming

Screed goes down halfway through a build, so its date is set by the trades either side of it. Before we pour, the house wants a finished roof, glazed windows, hung external doors, wet plaster done and any heating pipes in place and pressure tested. Once it is down, the screed needs drying time before tiles, LVT or timber, and how long depends on its depth and type. So fix the flooring fitter's date after the screed date, never before.

Then think about where the lorry goes. With pumped screed, the mixer and pump sit outside and a hose runs from them to the door, which is easy where a house has its own drive. It needs more care in the old centre around the Pepperpot, where buildings date from the 16th and 17th centuries, and on any street with parking limits. When you ask for a price, mention access, and say whether the room is at the back of a terrace or upstairs, so the day runs to plan.

We cover all of Godalming, Westbrook, Wheelerstreet, Frith Hill, Holloway Hill and Catteshall included, as well as Farncombe to the north. If only part of a floor has failed, we also carry out repairs to cracked or hollow screed.

FAQs

Screeding in Godalming: your questions

Who lays floor screed in Godalming?

K & B Screeding does, across Godalming and the neighbouring parts of Waverley, from our base in Slough. Our work covers pumped liquid screed, hand-laid sand and cement, screed over underfloor heating, anhydrite flow screeds and levelling compound. Tell us roughly how many square metres, what the room will be used for and how we get to it, and a fixed written price comes back within 24 hours.

How much does floor screeding cost for a Godalming extension?

For 2026, published UK rates run from £18 to £25 per m² for sand and cement and £24 to £31 per m² for liquid. On an extension, the figure also moves with depth, insulation, membranes and how far the hose has to travel. Once we have agreed the price in writing, it stays put, whatever happens on the day.

When should a Godalming renovation book its screed?

Get a quote as soon as the drawings are final, then pick a pour date for when the house is weathertight and the wet plastering has finished. In an older Godalming house where the solid floor is coming out, digging, membrane and insulation all happen before any screed arrives. Leave booking until the flooring fitter is waiting and you squeeze the drying time, which is hard to win back.
