Choosing a screed for Farnborough's post-war and newer homes
Census 2021 counted 23,943 households in the Farnborough built-up area, and 38% of the homes were built between 1945 and 1972. Semis and terraces from those decades are the heart of the town, and their floors tend to go one of two ways.
The first is an extension or a full floor replacement. Out comes the old slab, in go insulation and a membrane, and the new screed finishes the floor. In a run of small rooms or a hallway, hand-laid sand and cement screed for Farnborough renovations is a sound choice. In a wide extension, a pumped liquid screed covers the floor in one pour and is flat enough for most finishes with little extra work.
The second is a floor that stays but is not good enough. Homes from the 1970s onwards more often need levelling or repairs to cracked screed before new flooring goes down. The question then is whether the base is sound. If it is, levelling compound over the existing screed is quicker and cheaper than replacing it. If it is breaking up, a screed repair or a new floor is needed.
Newer flats are a third category. The flats planned in the town centre redevelopment will need screeds that meet sound insulation requirements between dwellings, which usually means a floating screed on an acoustic layer. Where heating is included as well, read our page on underfloor heating screed in Farnborough.

A pumped screed needs the mixer and pump parked near the house and a clear run for the hose to the room. In the terraced roads that usually means the road itself, so mention any permits, restrictions or tight access at the quoting stage. Sand and cement is delivered and mixed on site, which needs a small area for materials.
The second thing to plan is when. We screed after the room is weathertight, the wet plaster has finished and your heating installer has pressure tested any pipes. It then has to dry before flooring, so fix the pour date first and book the fitter after it, allowing proper drying time for the depth and material.
Commercial work sits alongside this. Cody Technology Park, beside Farnborough Airport, holds about 1.3 million sq ft of offices, laboratories and research space, with plans submitted for around 143,000 sq m of new and refurbished space over 10 to 15 years. Southwood Business Park is another of the borough's employment sites. Floors in buildings like these may need a new screed, repair or a flat base for new finishes when space is refurbished or re-let.
