Matching a screed to Haslemere and Shottermill homes
Census 2021 counted 11,897 people in the Haslemere built-up area. Their homes range from 16th century buildings on the High Street to houses finished this century, and each age of house tends to need something different from its floor.
Take the older houses first. In Haslemere and Shottermill, Victorian and Edwardian ground floors are often solid slabs resting directly on the earth, or suspended timber over a void. A renovation usually means excavating, fitting a membrane and insulation, and screeding. Where the rooms are small, or a bathroom is being laid to a fall, a hand-laid sand and cement screed in older houses is the practical option.
Many owners take that chance to add heating under the floor, which suits a thin liquid screed over the pipes. Our page on underfloor heating screed for Haslemere explains the depth and the heat-up.
Post-war homes, such as the 1953 council houses on Weycombe Road and Chatsworth Avenue, are more likely to need an extension floor matched to the existing level. Where that extension is wide and open, liquid screed pumped through a hose levels itself and can be walked on after 24 to 48 hours. A solid floor that just undulates may only want a levelling coat ahead of the new flooring.
Flats and new plots sometimes carry a calcium sulphate specification, which our anhydrite flow screed page covers in detail. If the damage is confined to one patch of a floor, repairing the failed screed can be enough.

Planning a Haslemere pour: access, timing and area
Haslemere sits where Surrey, Hampshire and West Sussex meet, and we cover the town and its surrounding places, including Critchmere, Woolmer Hill, Shepherd's Hill, Almshouse Common, Wey Hill, Grayswood, Hindhead and Beacon Hill.
The mixer and pump have to stand near enough to the building for the hose to reach. Where a detached house has its own drive, there is space to spare. In the older centre, or where a lane is narrow or parking is restricted, tell us when you ask for a price so we can plan the setup.
The other trades on site set the date. We pour once the house is weathertight, the wet plastering is complete and any heating pipes are down and have passed a pressure test. Tiles, stone or timber then wait for the screed to dry, for a period set by its depth and type. Finishes such as natural stone and engineered wood are particularly sensitive to moisture left in the screed, so the flooring date should follow a hygrometer drying test rather than a date on the calendar.
