Choosing a screed for Alton's semis, cottages and new homes
Census 2021 counted 7,921 households in the Alton built-up area. Their homes lean towards the second half of the twentieth century, with 28% built between 1945 and 1972 and many more in the decades that followed, and that shapes the work.
On houses of that period, the typical job is an extension, converting a garage, or knocking a wall through between kitchen and dining room. Because the extension floor has to meet the old one without a lip, we start from the existing floor level and work downwards to fix the depths of insulation, membrane and screed. On a wide rear extension, pumped liquid screed in Alton levels itself as it flows and is firm underfoot once 24 to 48 hours are up. Converting the garage, or doing one small room, is often better suited to traditional sand and cement laid by hand.
Older cottages and terraces are a different case. Their solid floors tend to be uneven, so before new finishes go down they usually need levelling with self levelling compound, or a new screed if the floor has failed.
Then there is the former Molson Coors brewery site, where Cala Homes has approval for 220 homes, a care home, extra care housing and the conversion of the Grade II listed Culverton House. New houses and apartments like these are where screed over underfloor heating is often specified.
Postcodes here include GU34, and we cover the whole town, from Anstey, Newtown and Mount Pleasant to Spitalhatch, The Butts and Cuckoo's Corner.

Timing the screed on an Alton extension or conversion
Screed is poured partway through a build, so it has to be booked around the other trades. On our day the room needs to keep the weather out, the plastering should ideally be dry work behind you, and any underfloor heating pipes must already be down and pressure tested. After the pour comes drying time, which depends on the screed type and depth, and flooring cannot go down until the floor has been tested. Booking early, then fixing the date once the roof and windows are on, avoids squeezing that drying period.
Access matters on the day. For a pumped floor, the truck and pump usually stand on your drive or the road outside, near enough for the hose to reach the room. If the drive is narrow, parking is restricted or the hose has a long way to go through the house, say so at the quote stage and we will have it planned well before the truck comes.
Alton has working floors too. Industry is concentrated at Mill Lane, Newman Lane, Caker Stream and Omega Park, with firms ranging from light manufacturing to software, and the brewery scheme adds a community hub, a 70 bed care home and a 58 bed extra care building, all of which need durable, level floors. Unit floors and larger schemes come under our commercial screeding service.
