Grinding unit floors at Caker Stream and Omega Park
Light manufacturing floors and office floors wear in different ways, but both end up needing grinding when the use changes. A workshop floor may carry painted lines, a worn coating or patches where machines were bolted down. An office floor is more likely to have carpet tile adhesive spread across the whole area.
Grinding takes those layers off with diamond heads that cut the surface back a little at a time. It also flattens lips where slab bays meet and removes laitance, the weak top skin left on many slabs and screeds, which would otherwise stop a new layer bonding.
What goes on afterwards decides how far we take it. A levelling compound wants a clean, open surface, and our floor levelling service in Alton can follow straight on. A new screed needs the same. A resin system from a specialist firm needs a surface prepared to their spec, and we can grind to that, though we do not install resin or polished concrete.
For a large floor with a thick coating, shot blasting or scarifying may get there faster, and we will say if one of those suits better. Equally, if the slab under the coating is cracked or crumbling, it needs repairing the concrete floor before a new finish goes down.
Our grinders and diamonds are not for sale or hire. The service is the finished, prepared floor.
Knock-throughs and garage slabs in Alton houses
In Alton houses the typical reason to grind is a join. When a kitchen knock-through or rear extension connects new and old floors, the two slabs rarely meet perfectly, and a ridge of a few millimetres along the old wall line is common. Grinding it down lets a thin compound carry one flat surface across both rooms.
Garage conversions are the next. A garage slab has often been painted, sealed or soaked with oil over the years, and none of that lets a new screed or compound bond. Grinding back to clean concrete is the first step before insulation and screed go on. Homes built between 2000 and 2014 are 10% of Alton's stock, and even a fairly new garage floor can carry a sealer that has to come off.
Then there is the floor under an old carpet or vinyl, where the adhesive left behind is grinding work rather than scraping.
Two cautions. Grinding takes off high spots but cannot correct a floor that dips across the room; levelling or screeding does that. And a screed ground too far loses the thickness it was designed to have.
Silica in concrete and screed becomes a harmful dust when ground, so extraction runs on every grinder we use and the rest of the house is sheeted off. Nearby, we also cover grinding in Basingstoke.
