Concrete Floor Grinding in Newham

Our own team grinds concrete slabs and screeds across Newham with diamond heads and dust extraction, taking off high spots, ridges, laitance, old adhesive and floor paint so the next layer has a clean, sound surface to bond to. Commercial floors around the Royal Docks and Stratford are obvious settings for it, and so are home extensions where new concrete meets old. This is preparation only. Grinders are not something we sell or hire out, and resin and polished concrete finishes are left to other trades.

Grinding unit floors around the Royal Docks and Beckton

A commercial refit in Newham often inherits a floor nobody has looked at closely for years. Large floors are in demand across the Royal Docks enterprise zone, and Beckton has traded as a commercial centre since the DLR reached it in 1994. An older commercial floor can carry carpet tile adhesive, painted walkways, raised lips at old bay joints and dusty laitance left from the original pour. New vinyl, compound or screed bonds poorly to any of it.

Grinding cuts that away. A machine fitted with rotating diamond segments takes the surface down in thin passes, removing contamination and shaving off ridges and trowel marks until sound concrete shows across the whole area. In a shop refit at Westfield Stratford City, the same passes take off old floor paint and hardened tile adhesive before the new finish goes down.

Dust is the hazard. Concrete, screed and tiles all contain silica, and cutting them releases fine respirable crystalline silica that nobody should breathe. We grind only with machines connected to extraction, seal off neighbouring areas and keep dust away from units still trading next door.

What grinding cannot do is flatten a floor that slopes or sags over a wide area. It removes local high points and nothing more. Where a unit floor dips across several metres, we take off the peaks, then bring the whole area true with levelling compound after grinding or a new screed. For thick coatings over very large floors, shot blasting or scarifying may be quicker, and our floor preparation service covers both.

Extension joins and garages in Newham homes

Grinding earns its place at home too. Where a rear extension meets the original back room of a terraced house, the new slab and the old floor rarely finish at exactly the same height. A lip of a few millimetres at that line will show through LVT. Grinding the high side down, then feathering the low side with compound, leaves one continuous surface.

Lifting tired carpet or vinyl often uncovers black bitumen or hardened adhesive stuck fast to the concrete. Scraping seldom gets it all, and fresh adhesive or latex will not bond to it reliably. A pass with diamond heads takes the residue back to clean concrete.

Garages becoming rooms bring their own surface problems: oil stains, painted floors and ridges from the original tamping. Grinding removes the paint and the worst of the marks before insulation or screed goes on, as our guide to garage conversion floors describes.

One caution applies to screeds. Every screed has a minimum depth, and grinding too much away can leave it thinner than it should be. We measure before starting and stop well short of that limit. If the base turns out to be cracked or hollow, repairing the concrete floor comes before anything else.

FAQs

Concrete Floor Grinding in Newham: your questions

Is concrete floor grinding very dusty?

It would be without control, which is why we never grind dry and open. Our machines run with dust extraction attached, the work area is screened off and neighbouring rooms or units are protected. That matters because the dust from concrete, screed and tiles contains respirable crystalline silica. If your Newham home or unit stays in use during the work, say so and the screening will be planned around it.

Can grinding level a sloping floor?

Not on its own. Grinding takes off local high spots, ridges and lips, but a floor that falls or dips across a whole room would need far too much removed to correct it. The practical route is to grind the peaks, then lay levelling compound or a new screed over the area. We measure the floor first and explain which combination it needs.

Do you hire out floor grinders in Newham?

No. K & B is a contractor, so our own team does the grinding, and machines and diamond segments are never sold or hired out. We also stop at preparation, so resin and polished concrete are outside our work. If a resin installer is following us, we leave a clean, sound surface for them to work on.
