Concrete Floor Grinding in Tower Hamlets

We grind concrete and screed floors in Tower Hamlets to strip laitance, old adhesive, paint and thin coatings and to cut down high spots and ridges, leaving a clean, sound face for whatever is laid next. Our own team does the work with diamond heads and dust extraction. Canary Wharf's offices and shops are the borough's main commercial floors, refitted regularly, and a refit there begins with whatever the previous tenant left on the floor.

Stripping Canary Wharf and Whitechapel refit floors

A grinder cuts the top of a floor away in thin layers using rotating diamond heads. On an office refit that means lifting carpet tile adhesive, vinyl glue, old paint and the odd thin coating, along with the trowel marks and lips between bays that would show under new vinyl or LVT. The result is a clean, open surface that takes primer, levelling compound or a new screed properly.

Canary Wharf's offices are refitted regularly, and that work can take place inside occupied buildings with fixed access hours, service lifts and neighbours on the floors above and below. That shapes how grinding is done. Machines run only with dust extraction, the work area is sealed off, and debris leaves by the agreed route.

Whitechapel's shops and markets are smaller jobs, but a unit that has been refitted more than once can carry several layers of residue.

Depth needs care in towers. Apartment and office floors are often floating screeds laid to a set thickness over acoustic insulation, and grinding too deep into one can take it below its minimum depth. We confirm the build-up and grind only what the finish needs.

Where a coating is thick or the area very large, shot blasting or scarifying through our floor preparation service may be quicker. After grinding, levelling compound for Tower Hamlets refits can bring the floor to the flatness the finish asks for.

Fish Island warehouses and older Tower Hamlets floors

Fish Island, by the Olympic Park, has turned from industrial warehouses into artists' studios and new flats, and part of it is a conservation area. Converted warehouse floors can carry decades of paint, sealers and spills. Grinding takes that back to sound concrete so the new use starts on a clean slab.

A converted space may be destined for a resin or polished concrete finish. We lay neither. Our part is the preparation: grinding, repairs and any levelling, leaving a surface a resin contractor can work on.

In homes, grinding is more targeted. Lifting old vinyl or carpet in a post-war estate flat can leave adhesive that has to come off before a thin latex screed in a Tower Hamlets flat or new flooring will bond.

Grinding cannot cure a floor that slopes. It removes high spots; it does not raise low ones, so a floor that dips across a room is ground and then levelled or screeded.

We are a contractor, not a hire shop, and none of our grinders or diamond tooling is sold or hired out.

FAQs

Concrete Floor Grinding in Tower Hamlets: your questions

Can you grind floors in an occupied office building at Canary Wharf?

Yes, with planning. The grinders run with dust extraction at the cutting head, the work area is sealed, and noisy work is fitted around the building's permitted hours. We agree lift use, waste removal and protection of finished areas with the building manager beforehand. Silica dust is the main hazard, and extraction is used every time, without exception.

Do you lay polished concrete floors?

No. We do not lay polished concrete or resin. What we do is the groundwork for other finishes: grinding off old coatings and high spots, repairing and levelling, so the floor is clean and sound. If you want a polished or resin floor in a Tower Hamlets warehouse conversion, we can prepare it for the specialist who lays that finish.

Can grinding remove old vinyl adhesive from a concrete floor?

Yes. Diamond grinding cuts through hardened vinyl and carpet adhesive until clean concrete shows, which gives primer and compound a surface to grip. Soft, tacky residues can clog the diamonds, so heavy deposits are scraped first. Across the borough boundary, see concrete floor grinding in Hackney.
