Concrete Floor Grinding Contractors in Lambeth

Our own team grinds concrete and screed floors in Lambeth with diamond heads and dust extraction, taking off high spots, ridges, laitance, old adhesive and floor paint so the next layer has a clean, sound surface to bond to. Here the need comes mostly from refits: Brixton Market units being fitted out, refurbishment work at Waterloo's South Bank cultural quarter, and new commercial floor space around Nine Elms. Grinders and diamonds are never sold or hired out by us, and resin or polished concrete finishes are outside our work.

Grinding shop and office floors from Brixton to Waterloo

A grinder works like a very coarse sander for concrete. Diamond segments on a spinning head shave concrete or screed down a fraction at a time, so the operator can take down a ridge, flatten the lip where two pour bays meet or skim off a stubborn film without breaking anything out.

In a Brixton Market unit between tenants, or a South Bank venue being refurbished, the floor under the old finish rarely starts clean. Carpet tiles leave tackifier, vinyl leaves a hard adhesive bed, and earlier occupiers may have painted the concrete. Levelling compound, fresh adhesive and resin applied by others all need that layer gone, because each can only hold as well as whatever lies beneath it. Grinding removes it and opens the surface so primer can soak in.

New space has faults of its own. The Vauxhall and South Lambeth redevelopment zone is adding large volumes of commercial floor. Where new slabs are cast in bays, they can leave steps at the joints, trowel marks and a weak surface skin. A pass with the grinder takes them off before the fit out trades arrive.

What grinding cannot do is correct a floor that slopes or sags across a whole room. Taking the high side down far enough would cut too deep, and on a screed it could leave less than the minimum depth. For that, we grind the local high spots and bring the rest up with levelling compound for Lambeth floors or a new screed.

Dust control in Lambeth flats and estate blocks

Concrete, screed and tile all contain silica, and cutting them releases fine respirable crystalline silica dust that harms the lungs. We only grind with extraction connected directly to the machine, and we seal off neighbouring rooms, doors and vents before starting. In a borough where most people live in flats, with neighbours a floor or a wall away, that care is part of the job rather than an extra.

Homes built between 1973 and 1999 make up 12% of Lambeth's stock, and the borough's large council estates, Stockwell Park and Loughborough among them, mix 1940s low rise blocks and towers from the 1960s and 1970s. When flats like these are refurbished and old vinyl is lifted, the slab beneath can be coated in adhesive, and grinding is a tidy way to clear it before new coverings or compound.

Extensions are another case. Where a new extension slab meets the old floor there may be a lip along the join, and grinding the proud edge down allows both areas to be levelled as one.

For big open areas or thick coatings, shot blasting may be quicker; see shot blasting as part of floor preparation. Cracks and broken patches are dealt with under concrete floor repair.

FAQs

Concrete Floor Grinding in Lambeth: your questions

Can concrete floor grinding level a sloping floor in Lambeth?

Only in part. Grinding is good at removing local high spots, ridges and lips, but a floor that slopes or dips across a whole room would have to be cut far too deep to come level. We grind the high points and then bring the low areas up with compound or a new screed, depending on how far out the floor is.

Do you grind floors ready for resin or polished concrete?

We can prepare a slab for a resin system laid by another contractor, removing laitance, old coatings and contamination so the resin has a sound surface. We do not lay resin ourselves, and we do not produce polished concrete floors. Tell us what the resin installer needs from the surface and we grind to suit.

Can I hire a floor grinder from you for a Lambeth job?

No. We are a contracting team, not a hire shop, so we do not sell or rent out grinders or diamond tooling. Our own operators bring the machine and the extraction, do the grinding and leave the floor clean for the next trade. That also keeps silica dust under control in a flat or shop unit with neighbours close by.
