Concrete Floor Grinding in Wandsworth

We grind concrete and screed floors in Wandsworth, removing high spots, ridges, laitance, old adhesive and floor paint so whatever goes down next bonds to firm material rather than old residue. Our own team runs the machines, always with dust extraction attached. Commercial space is the obvious setting here: shops, leisure and offices at Battersea Power Station, the offices of Nine Elms and units at New Covent Garden Market are typical settings, and a new fit out there often means cutting the old floor back before compound, screed or flooring goes down.

Fit out preparation at Battersea Power Station and Nine Elms

A shop or office that has been fitted out before keeps a record of it in the floor. Under the old carpet tiles there may be pressure sensitive adhesive, under the vinyl a hard tile glue, and around the edges painted lines, filled service trenches and ridges where one slab pour met the next. Laying compound or a new finish straight over that means trusting a bond to whatever the last tenant left behind.

Grinding cuts back to sound material. Rotating diamond heads pass over the slab and remove the surface in thin layers, taking off adhesive, paint and thin coatings along with high spots, trowel marks and lips between bays. The surface left behind is clean and slightly open, which is what a primer needs.

When a fit out runs in a building that stays partly occupied, dust control is the first thing to plan. Grinding concrete or screed releases fine silica dust, so every machine runs with extraction, and the work area is sealed from neighbouring units and common parts.

We are a contractor doing preparation, not a hire shop: we do not sell or rent out grinders or tooling. Nor do we lay resin or polished concrete. If a resin specialist is following us, we prepare the slab to their brief; if the next layer is compound, the details are on our Wandsworth floor levelling page. For thick coatings across a large floor, shot blasting may be quicker, as our floor preparation service explains.

Side returns and basements in Balham and Earlsfield

Houses need grinding for narrower reasons. Extending a pre-1919 Balham or Earlsfield house to the side or rear puts a new slab against an older floor, and the meeting point is rarely flush. Taking the high edge down with a grinder is often all it needs before a single levelling coat runs across both.

Basements throw up another case. Once the waterproofing is in and the slab has cured, there may be laitance, splashes of mortar or ridges left from finishing that need removing before the floor build-up continues.

Then there is old adhesive. When carpet or vinyl is lifted in an older Tooting or Balham home, a skin of glue often remains on the concrete, and grinding clears it so the new finish is not bonded to something weak.

The limits apply here as anywhere. Grinding flattens local high spots, but a floor that falls across the whole room cannot be ground flat without removing far too much. Grind the peaks, then level or screed. A thin screed also has a minimum depth, and we keep well clear of grinding past it.

Indoors, the dust question is sharper still, so extraction stays attached and doors to other rooms are sealed. Where damage turns up under old finishes, see concrete floor repair. In Lambeth, our floor grinding page for Lambeth applies.

FAQs

Concrete Floor Grinding in Wandsworth: your questions

What is the difference between grinding and shot blasting a floor?

Grinding uses rotating diamond heads to cut the surface down and smooth high spots, which suits adhesive, paint, laitance and lips between bays. Shot blasting fires steel shot at the surface to roughen it and strip coatings, and it is often quicker across large areas or under thick coatings. On a Wandsworth fit out, the floor and the next finish decide which is right.

Do you grind floors ready for resin?

Yes, we can grind and clean a slab so it is ready for a resin specialist, following their surface brief. We do not lay resin or polished concrete ourselves. In a shop at Clapham Junction or an office at Nine Elms, that usually means agreeing the surface texture and timing with the resin contractor before we start.

Can grinding damage a thin screed?

It can if it goes too deep. Every screed has a minimum thickness for its type, and grinding too much away can leave it below that and prone to cracking. We check the depth before grinding a Wandsworth floor and take only what is needed to remove high spots and contamination. If the floor needs more than that, levelling or new screed is the answer.
