Liquid Screed Contractors in Wandsworth

In Wandsworth, 48% of homes are in purpose-built blocks of flats, and that makes pumped liquid screed a natural fit. The hose runs from the street to the room, whatever the floor level, so nothing is barrowed up the stairs. We pour liquid screed into flats, new apartments and ground floor extensions across the borough. Once in, it finds its own level, wraps any heating pipes and is ready for foot traffic after 24 to 48 hours.

Pumping to upper floors from Nine Elms to Roehampton

Getting screed to a third floor flat by hand means dozens of bags, a mixer on the landing and a day of carrying. With liquid screed the material stays in the lorry and travels through a hose, up the stairwell or through a window, straight to the room. That is why it suits a borough where so many people live above the ground floor.

Before quoting, we check three things. First, where the lorry can stand, because the pour has to happen in one go. Second, the hose route and how the common parts will be protected. Third, the floor build-up, including any acoustic layer, insulation and heating, so the depth is right.

Along the Nine Elms riverside, new apartments are specified with liquid screed over underfloor heating from the start. In those blocks the screed is part of the design, so the depth, the product and the pour sequence are fixed on the drawings long before the screeders arrive. Older blocks being refurbished can use it too, provided the structure below is sound and the existing floor layers have been opened up and checked first.

Two binders are on offer for the pumped mix: calcium sulphate or cement. Both are pumped and self-levelling; the choice depends on the finish, the heating and whether the floor may get wet. Our screed pumping page explains the pumping itself in more detail.

Flat floors for Balham and Tooting extensions

The open-plan kitchen at the back of a house is the other place liquid screed does well. A wide floor, poured in one visit, reaches SR1 or SR2 flatness readily, which suits large-format tiles and LVT. Because it barely shrinks, it needs a fraction of the joints a traditional screed would. On a long side return that means a continuous floor from the front room to the garden doors, without the joint lines that can telegraph through a thin finish.

Depth matters. Floating on insulation in a home, the minimum is around 35mm; for commercial floors it is around 40mm. Heating pipes need 25mm of screed on top as a minimum, so a heated floor tends to be 45 to 50mm deep.

Being able to step across it within a couple of days is one thing; laying the new floor is another. Budget roughly one drying day per millimetre up to 40mm, and get a moisture reading before any flooring is fitted. Going by 2026 published figures, a liquid floor starts at £24 a square metre and tops out at £31.

FAQs

Liquid Screed in Wandsworth: your questions

Can liquid screed be poured in a flat with no lift?

Yes, usually. From the lorry in the street the hose goes up the staircase or in through a window, so the block does not need a lift. We check the route, protect the common parts and confirm where the lorry can park. In Wandsworth blocks, that access check is done before we quote, because the pour must be completed in one go.

How long before liquid screed can take foot traffic?

Normally after 24 to 48 hours, with the exact time set by the product used and how warm the room is. That is light foot traffic only. Tiles, LVT and wood wait until the screed has dried, and with calcium sulphate the surface laitance must be removed first. The screed's product sheet and a moisture test decide the flooring date.

Does liquid screed work for a small bathroom?

Not always. A bathroom often needs a fall to a drain and may get wet, and calcium sulphate liquid screed is not suited to that. A cement based screed, or hand-laid sand and cement, is normally the better choice there, even when the rest of the flat has liquid screed.
