Pumped screed for big Richmond upon Thames extensions
A large rear extension on a semi turns the back of the house into one broad room, often kitchen, dining and living space in one. That is the floor liquid screed is made for. A hose carries it from the mixer into the room, it fills the whole extension in one go, and because it barely shrinks it settles flat with hardly any joints.
Wherever the house is in the borough, the screed must finish exactly at the level of the existing floor, or a step or ramp appears at the old back wall. Depth is set before the pour with levelling tripods across the room, and the screed is worked with a dipping bar so it reaches SR1 or SR2 readily. Laid against a 2m straightedge, SR1 shows a gap of 3mm at most and SR2 a gap of up to 5mm.
In a house the floating layer begins at roughly 35mm, rising to around 40mm for a commercial floor. Heated extensions need a minimum of 25mm over the pipework, so the total comes to something like 45 to 50mm. Some pumped screeds use a calcium sulphate binder and some use cement; how the calcium sulphate type is specified is covered under anhydrite grades and finishing.
Normally the new kitchen can be walked on a day or two later, 24 to 48 hours from the pour. Stone or timber has to wait much longer: each of the first 40 millimetres takes about a day to dry, and deeper layers slow down further. Ways to help it along are in our article on screed drying times.
Getting the pump to the room in Kew and Teddington
Only 8% of homes in Richmond upon Thames were built after 2000, so most liquid screed goes into an existing house, not an open site. We set the pump up on the street or on your drive, then lead the hose through the hall or down the side of the house to the new room. The hose can cover a long distance, so the lorry does not need to reach the garden.
Whether you are in Kew, Teddington or elsewhere, if your street has resident parking, tell us when you ask for a price, so a bay suspension or an early start can be planned. Protection goes down along the hose route through the house.
Inside, the base must be sealed: a taped membrane over the insulation, edge strip round every wall and dams across doorways, or the fluid escapes. Where the job is a small room, a wet room or a floor broken up by steps, hand laid sand and cement screed may suit better. For a side by side view of cost, speed and depth, read liquid screed or sand and cement.
