Underfloor Heating Screed in Stevenage

Once a plumber has laid and tested wet heating loops in a Stevenage room, we cover them in liquid or sand and cement screed, picked to suit the system and the height you have, then hand over a written warm-up plan. Stevenage splits between new and old. New homes in the SG1 town centre scheme and the newer houses at Great Ashby are built with underfloor heating screeds, while older homes add heating in extensions.

Heated floors in Great Ashby and SG1 new homes

On a new home, underfloor heating is designed in from the start. Only 7% of the town's housing went up from 2015 onwards, yet that slice is where heated floors are standard. New homes in the SG1 town centre scheme and the newer houses at Great Ashby call for underfloor heating screeds, and a new build is planned with insulation, pipes and screed as one build-up. The depth is set on the drawings, and the screed contractor's job is to pour it exactly.

What sits above the loops is the figure to watch. Pumped screed wants 25mm or more there, which typically comes to around 45 to 50mm overall, whereas a hand-laid mix needs about 45mm over the loops alone and so ends up thicker and weightier. On most new builds a pumped liquid screed is chosen because it encapsulates every pipe without air pockets, spreading heat evenly across the room.

Acoustic floors add a requirement of their own. They are part of the same picture for the SG1 scheme and Great Ashby, and on an acoustic floor the layers under the screed have to be complete and correctly lapped before any pour. We inspect those layers before pumping, and if the developer has left them to us, our insulation supply fills the gap.

Once the build-up is ready, the pour itself works like any other liquid screed pour in Stevenage. An SG1 specification calling for a CA grade means anhydrite, so see our page on anhydrite for Stevenage floors for its drying, sanding and first warm-up.

Adding heating to Stevenage extensions and garage conversions

Older houses usually get underfloor heating one room at a time, most often in a rear extension or a converted garage. Because those floors are new, the insulated slab can be designed to take pipes and screed and still finish level with the existing house.

Pour day is not switch-on day. An anhydrite floor can normally be warmed a week later, about 7 days, but sand and cement stays off for 21 days or more. From there your heating engineer follows our written plan, starting with a cool flow temperature and lifting it bit by bit across several days. Jumping straight to full heat is how plenty of new floors crack.

Fitting the loops is outside what we do, and that holds for a Chells extension just as much as a Great Ashby new build. They should be fixed and pressure tested before we arrive, and we agree the date with the installer so nothing holds up the pour.

What the job costs depends on area, depth, access and whether we supply the insulation and edge strip; the cost guide explains each factor.

FAQs

Underfloor Heating Screed in Stevenage: your questions

Can underfloor heating go into a 1960s Stevenage terrace?

It can, but height is the challenge. The existing floor sets the level of doors and the bottom stair, so adding insulation, pipes and screed usually means digging out the old floor. Liquid screed, at about 45 to 50mm in total, keeps the build-up thinner than sand and cement. An extension is often the simpler place to start.

Is liquid or sand and cement screed better over underfloor heating?

Both work. Pumped screed hugs every loop, needs a shallower layer on top and, in its calcium sulphate form, can normally be warmed after about 7 days. A hand-laid mix wants about 45mm over the loops and a 21 day wait before heat, though it copes with wet rooms. For most Stevenage new builds and extensions, liquid is the usual choice.

What price is screed over underfloor heating?

Pumped screed over heating loops is listed at £20 to £35 per m² in 2026 published figures. Where your Stevenage floor lands in that band comes down to its size, depth and access, plus whether insulation and edge strip come from us. You get a firm written figure inside 24 hours, settled before we begin.
