New town terraces to Great Ashby: Stevenage floors
Census 2021 recorded 94,462 people in the Stevenage built-up area, and much of its housing is new town terraces. So the ground floor of a new town terrace is a common place to start. In Bedwell, Broadwater, Shephall and Chells, houses from the 1950s and 1960s often have original screeds that have cracked, or old floor tiles that come up to reveal an uneven base. Some need only a skim of compound, handled by our floor levelling in Stevenage. Others need the screed taken up and relaid, usually by hand, and our sand and cement screed page covers that.
Extensions and garage conversions on the same houses are a separate job. Whether it is a converted garage or a kitchen pushed out at the back, the new insulated slab has to land flush with the original hall, and room size plus how easily we can reach it decide whether that floor is pumped in or laid by hand.
The newer end of the town works differently. Homes in the SG1 town centre scheme and the newer houses at Great Ashby call for underfloor heating screeds, acoustic floors and pumped liquid screed. For those, see liquid screed for Stevenage homes and the page on screeding over underfloor heating.
The town also takes in Old Town, Pin Green, Poplars, Symonds Green, Fishers Green, Chells Manor and Bragbury End. Wherever the house is, the first step is the same: find out what the existing floor is made of, and what height the new one has to reach.

Pump access, timing and Gunnels Wood Industrial Area units
A screed date is fixed by the trades around it. Windows in, plastering dried off and any heating loops proven under pressure: that is the state a Stevenage room needs to be in on pour day. The flooring fitter should be booked for when the screed has dried, not for when it can first be walked on.
Access is the other point to settle early. For a pumped floor, the lorry has to get close enough for our hose to reach a door; for a hand-laid one, we need a patch of ground for sand, cement and a mixer until the end of the day. If the house fronts a footpath, or the nearest parking is some distance away, tell us when you ask for a price so the hose run can be planned.
Commercial floors are handled on their own terms. Gunnels Wood Industrial Area, between the East Coast main line and the A1, is the town's main employment zone, home to MBDA and one of GSK's two global R&D hubs. Laboratory, production and warehouse buildings there call for high strength and fibre reinforced screeds, grinding and accurate levelling, and our high strength screed service covers the heavier floors.
