Old centre, Bengeo and Sele Farm: matching Hertford floors
Census 2021 counted 28,807 people in the Hertford built-up area. The Census also shows how old their homes are, and the answer is mixed: 16% were built before 1919, while another 26% date from 1973 to 1999. With that spread, each job starts by finding out what is under the floor.
Close to the centre, where the medieval street plan and timber-framed buildings survive, period terraces and cottages often have solid floors laid with no damp proof membrane. The cure is to dig the floor out, put in a membrane and insulation, then finish with sand and cement screed laid by hand, set at a depth that lines up with the old door thresholds.
Post-war and late twentieth century houses have different needs: extension slabs and kitchen refits. A large new kitchen floor suits a pumped liquid screed, which is flat, dense and walkable within 24 to 48 hours. If heating pipes are part of the plan, the page on heated floors and screed explains pipe cover and switching on.
The town's named areas include Bengeo north of the River Beane, Pine Hurst, the Foxholes Estate, Horns Mill, Rush Green and Sele Farm, and the same approach applies in each: find out what is under the floor, then choose the screed. A solid floor with dips but no damp may only want a thin pour of levelling compound over the top.

Access and timing for a Hertford screed pour
In a Hertford renovation, the screed slots in between other trades. Before we pour, windows and outside doors want to be fitted, the wet plaster finished and any heating pipes through their pressure test. Drying then depends on depth and material, which is why a flooring fitter should be booked from the screed date, not before it.
Think about getting to the room early on. For a pumped pour, our mixer lorry and pump have to stand within a hose length of the room. In the centre, with its medieval street plan, mention the frontage and any kerb space when you ask for a price; a hand-mixed screed brought in by barrow is sometimes the simpler answer for a small cottage floor.
Units on Mead Lane are another matter from houses. Mead Lane Business Centre, near Hertford East station, is the town's principal industrial area, with the smaller Marsh Lane Industrial Estate close by. Older units there often need concrete repair and preparation before new floors go in, and East Herts Council's plans for the former gas works site include around 3,000 square metres of new employment space. Our commercial screeding service covers work of that kind.
