Liquid Screed in Sudbury

We pump and lay liquid screed in Sudbury for extensions, open-plan ground floors and newer homes. The local point that matters is the building stock since 2000: 22% of the town's homes date from then, and homes of that age usually have an insulated ground floor. On that kind of insulated floor, a screed that finds its own level is quicker to lay. On older homes a pump can still work, as long as we can reach the room.

Where pumped screed suits Sudbury homes

The screed turns up already mixed, and a hose carries it from the pump straight onto the insulation. It finds its own level, so a large area is covered in a single day with no hand compaction. That makes it a strong fit for the kind of floor that is wide and uninterrupted: a rear kitchen extension, a knocked-through dining room, or a whole ground floor in a newer house.

The town has a solid share of recent building. Around 8% of Sudbury's homes were built from 2015 onwards, and plots of that age are designed around an insulated floor, sometimes with heating pipes. A flowing screed wraps fully around pipes with no air pockets, which helps heat spread evenly.

Depth is modest. In a house, a floating pour can be as thin as about 35mm where traditional sand and cement takes 65mm, and that spare height helps when a Sudbury extension has to line up with the room it opens into. It reaches SR1 or SR2 flatness without much trouble, a good base for LVT and big tiles. That flatness also cuts down on levelling compound later, which saves a step before the floor fitter arrives.

Liquid screeds come in two kinds, calcium sulphate and cement based. The first is common in dry rooms; the second is chosen where a floor may get wet. To weigh a pumped floor against a hand-laid one, see how liquid and sand and cement compare.

Getting the pump to rooms in Great Cornard and Ballingdon

Floor size is rarely the hard part; reaching it is. The pump stays out on the drive or the street while the hose snakes in to the room. Hoses can run through a hallway, along a side passage or up a stairwell, and long runs are manageable. What we need to know is where the pump and the delivery lorry can stand, and whether that space is available on the day.

Where parking is on the road, it helps to reserve space outside or tell neighbours in advance. Upper floor flats are possible as long as the hose can reach the level safely, and a pour there needs the rooms sealed and the doorways dammed.

After the pour you can normally cross it within a day or two, somewhere between 24 and 48 hours. How soon flooring can follow is another question, tied to depth and ventilation, and our drying time advice gives the waits to plan around. Heating going into the extension? Then heated floor screed in Sudbury sets out the depth over the pipes and when they can first be run.

FAQs

Liquid Screed in Sudbury: your questions

How thick should liquid screed be in a Sudbury extension?

In a Sudbury house laid over insulation, a floating liquid floor can go down at around 35mm. Where heating pipes run underneath, they want 25mm or more on top, which tends to bring the whole depth to 45 to 50mm. We confirm the depth once we know the insulation, the pipe height and the level of the floor the extension must meet.

Can liquid screed be pumped from the road to a terraced house?

Usually, yes. The pump stays on the street and the hose runs through the front door, a side passage or a hallway to the room. We need space for the pump and the delivery vehicle close by, so it helps to tell us about parking and any shared access when you ask for a quote.

Is liquid screed more expensive than a traditional screed?

Slightly, by the square metre. On the UK rates published for 2026, a pumped Sudbury floor costs from £24 up to £31 a square metre, against £18 up to £25 for the hand-laid kind. On a large open floor the faster pour and thinner section can narrow that gap. On a small room, traditional screed is often better value.
